I had the exact portfolio shown in my signature, and never even received any art tests from companies. When I moved to where the oportunities are, it took me a couple of months to find my first internship. But I had a backup plan and the risk for me was minimal.
I'd suggest you start selling 3d models online, try outsourcing, or join an outsourcing studio. And do challenges from artstation, flippednormals, the rookies etc.
@Alex_J you might want to put a "-" into excuse-making energy, for better readability.
OP, what Alex said was very true for my case. There's not an easy way out, I know the Balkan area very well. You need to redirect your anger, frustration of the situation and your passion towards making more art.
At least what got rid of my excuses and gave me the energy to continue, was my anger and frustration from my previous workplace, the lack of support and belief from my family, and the fact that I wanted to be in a creative job or get depressed and suppressed in an environment I hated but somehow ended up in.

what will make you stand out is when your excuse-making energy goes towards making excuses to win, not to lose.
Simply create outstanding art. So easy and yet so hard ...
