I've seen now multiple instance where either one or the other was used -
and I'm wondering what reasons do you have for picking either one or the other.
For clarification: I'm talking about the lowpoly.
For now I see primarily these pros and cons
- baking can be super easy when all teeth are separate objects and are name-matched between HP and LP but the setup is more time consuming
- texturing is also easier from the masking point of view
- though you get possible aliasing and less smooth transitions if the teeth are separate
- Edit: you need a higher polycount to precisely model the intersection of teeth and gum
- Edit2: of course if there is a need to remove a teeth dynamically / via animation you have to go with separated ones

How low are you talking? A lowpoly example down at the bottom here

That's actually a good example how you can get away with a very low polycount if you have no separate teeth!
