Trim sheets, how do I make them?

hi my name is norton. im a student here in sweden and i am studying 3D graphics. im sorry if im in the wrong topic or forum for this question!

i dont feel like i learn anything in school and that i cant progress there, this is why i ask for help!
i have heard from youtube videos that trim sheets are a really important thing to know but im having a hard time understanding how to make them. dose anyone have any tips on making them? or a really good tutorial for it (video or artical talking about it) that you could share with me?

thank you very much in before hand for helping me to reach my goals of being able to work for a game or film studio in the future!

First thing to learn about asking questions here is to use the topic title to summarize your question. Your title in this case should be something like "Trim sheets, how do I make them?" instead of only "I wish to learn!"

pior i have seen that one

that is why i know that they exist, the problem is that im not good enough on what i do to follow. i have no ide how to get it out in substance painter and render it to a flat surface and all of that... that is an amazing video!!! but i need something nire with like step by step...

i did find this one when i was going through some liks and some stuff i found here but im stuck half way when he rendered the stuff... he didnt explain how i did the rendering part....

Usually if I find that I am having trouble following along with instruction, it means I am missing some prerequisite knowledge. So I have to go a few steps back before I can go forward.

A lot of the youtube tutorials and gumroad tutorials are geared towards people who already got the basics down and only need high-level direction. They know enough to no longer need step-by-step.

I'd recommend checking out any of the big tutorial libraries. 3dmotive, Lynda, Pluralsight. Do all of the tutorials for your software, and do all the tutorials for your discipline (enviro art.) There will be a lot of redundancy but that is good. By the time you finish, you'll have most of the basics down to the point that when you read a professional artists workflow breakdown, you'll be able to understand and fill in the gaps.

Look up tutorials of xnormal. Its a very powerful software for baking high details to low poly mesh.

OP : forget about Substance Painter or even baking at this point, this is completely irrelevant to trim techniques themselves. Trim/tiling-based game art is as old a the very first 3d games out there.

All you need to get started is Photoshop (or equivalent) to make a color-only master texture (don't even worry about the normalmap/materials aspect at this point), and a 3d program to apply it to UVed models.

In other words, the requisites are :

- Knowing how to create textures in PS
- Knowing how to model simple objects
- Knowing how to UV simple models.

Everything else is completely irrelevant until you get a good grasp on these 3 things.
