So I’ve been working on assets for a sort of faux-character creator lately. There’s way more options than are shown here, but I thought I’d put together a mockup screenshot of the interface for the moment. I'll add some characters created with it soon.
WIP on a new map.. I always tend to draw huge-gantic world maps, so I'm scaling down on this one and doing a regional map. Still turned out bigger than I intended.
Doing more maps in the Wind region = coming up with more words in Haak = I need to update my Haak dictionary and grammar rules tonight.
MAPS. Guys I can't stop. (PS I might already have a Navalla city map in the works >.> )
Btw I made one of those instagram things for if you want to see occasional pictures of my actual life (when I leave the house), and also one of those twittery things in case you... want.. to hear me muse about stuff? I guess? I don't know man social media.
Hmmm. I can see what you mean. I tend to rather like heavy linework, perhaps to my detriment. :P I was worried about the lines getting lost with the size of the image. One of the difficulties of working on a large scale map I think. I'll go back and rework that.
In the meantime....tree studies! Trying to get better at trees in general, paying particular attention to the overall shape and how the leaves group together without getting too bogged down in detail, which has always been a struggle for me.
(Side note: is anyone else going mad with these smiley faces in the message editor here? They keep popping up everywhere!)
I've decided to create a plant species guide for Riak. Starting with just one region for now, I'll be doing sketches of a variety of flora and adding notes, descriptions, and detail images for each. I'd like to do maybe 10 or so before compiling them into a "book"..
Anyhow, this is the first, sans formatting and extra info (which exists, but elsewhere for the moment)
Still chugging away at the Riak Plant Guide between freelance projects. As a person who never put much thought into the idea of drawing plants, I'm finding it pretty enjoyable.
Anyway. A little preview! Still want to do maybe 4-6 more before assembling it all.
Just from looking over your sketchbook from the beginning I can tell your colors and especially your faces are getting better! Your style looks very nice as well! One thing I want to add is just maybe look over the anatomy a little bit more before finalizing or detailing. It could be touched up a little. At least for the more realistic ones
Finally had some spare time to finish my plant species guide for the Tide region of Riak. I've never done anything like this before (actually I'd hardly ever drawn plants before I started this), and I had a ton of fun with it.
Some sort of seer for Riak. Here's an excerpt from the Great and Wonderful Ever Growing Book of Riak regarding her body paint...
Red Fallow - A commonplace hallucinogen made from crushed up Starberries and other ingredients. The substance must be Imbued by a Speaker to be effective - otherwise it will have little to no effect. Red Fallow takes the form of a thick red paste that is applied to the skin, often in intricate and symbolic patterns, though this is not necessary to ensure its effectiveness. It can cause vivid and sometimes prophetic visions, but does not usually result in manifestations.
I'm not sure that I would recommend not doing any art for several weeks, but if you do, sometimes you have interesting results upon your return.
Anyways, Merry late-Christmas and Happy pre-New Years and stuff! Retail holiday hell is finally (almost) over, so I'm looking forward to having the energy to cope with life again!
My wonderful nerdy coworkers and I have been passing the time at work lately by creating fantasy characters for ourselves, so I had to do a quick doodle of mine, obviously.
Short version: she does magic by painting on stuff and her elephant is blind so she wears lots of jinglies. Also, her hair might change color with her emotions? Unconfirmed.
A map I did a few months back for author Stephani Loree's book Between Thieves. I'd never done this sort of map before and it was a ton of fun to work on.
In the old world, it was common practice to collect data over the course of a person's life in order to reconstruct an AI of their personality to remain after their death. This data is contained in a small portable storage device known as a Shell. Near the end of the Last Fall, The Blue Rose Research Group, conducting studies on AI and human consciousness, began to illegally download and combine large numbers of AI personalities into AP, or Aggregate Personalities.
The BRRG created many different APs, to a variety of standards and qualifiers. Dr. Braius Fetale, Lead Researcher of AP Development, was hailed as an intellectual savior when he designed an algorithm that could analyze each downloaded shell for a variety of personality traits, or Definers, and organize them into a viewable interface.
Another important feature of Shell technology is that it can, when fully integrated and combined with other technologies, make an entity nearly immortal, for all intents and purposes.

Trying out a bit of a new style today...when I should be finishing other pieces. >.>
(Also HAH I just realized I drew a foot backwards on my previous post.)
Maps! Maps! Maps, maps maps!

I'm not so fond of the thick line weight though, makes things look a bit clunky and amateurish, unfortunately.
You could try varying the thickness of your outlines. Maybe only use thick lines for the water/land boundary.
The light/thick topo lines, and the light/thick shallow-water lines, maybe those could stay as-is. It's the dark ones that seem the most out of place.
The line weights on your point-of-interest drawings looks great.

Oh my gosh where have I been!
Mostly doing freelance stuff, is where.
Here's a morning sketch!
(On a totally unrelated note, I'm considering dyeing my hair purple..)

I got off of work right at sunset tonight, rather than after dark, and was so excited that I had to do some paintings of it.
(Okay, yes, I took a reference picture while driving. On an on-ramp. Shhh.)
