Hello! I'm Kim, and I paint, mostly. I love 2D game art, natural environments, anything hand painted, and, more than anything, concept art and world-building.
Some more hand painted tiling terrain textures. It turns out that I.. really enjoy doing these. Will definitely do more when I get a spare minute.
This rock texture is for a very surreal sort of cave environment, and goes with the snow texture from the last post.
And some cracked dirt and grass for terrain in a different level. I've never done a grass texture before and was feeling quite daunted, so I'm pretty pleased with how it came out.
This is a character of mine that I tend to draw alot... wanted to try painting her in a style similar to the League of Legends splash art pieces. Still doesn't quite compare to the Sona art I have as my desktop right now, but... I feel like I definitely made some great improvements just in this piece. :]
Hey, thanks! And um... my whole life? Ish? but only seriously for maybe 6 years or so. Blood sweat and tears, man. And hand cramps. But mostly tears. :P
Alright! So I've been working on this student game project called Lost in Thought for quite a few months now, and I suppose today's the day that I finally get around to posting screenshots. These shots are from our first version, which ended up serving as a sort of prototype... now we're going back through and reworking the first level and some of the mechanics.
The game is a combination of 2D cutouts and 3D models... I painted all the 2D pieces, the backgrounds, terrain and a bunch of the 3D textures. Pretty much most of what you can see. :P
Wow this stuff's really inspirational! You have a really good grasp on color theory. That underwater scene is beautiful, really alien. Can't wait to see more awesome junk!
Thank you! That means alot. Colour is definitely my favourite part of painting (I have a harder time doing things only in black and white), but I still don't feel like I've got nearly the grasp on it that I would like to.
Thanks SuperKash! I really want to get back to painting more tiling textures once I get a chance.
Anyway, these are some character concepts for Riak (a pet project of mine) They're a bit old, but I just went back and revisited it some so here you go. Also, I've always been a bit fond of them. They were grayscale, but added some colour in just roughly... not sure how I'm feeling about it yet.
Thanks for all the comments! It's always nice to get feedback on stuff.
@Austin Martin - Funnily enough, characters are pretty much all I used to do. I made an effort to start doing more environments, and now I've ended up in a position where it's really all I CAN do for Lost in Thought at least (only one character... and he's done. XD ).
Turns out environments are actually pretty fun though. Who knew!
This used to be a background for the first level of Lost in Thought, and then I went back to it and turned it into something else. Not my typical style at all, but interesting enough.
@Alismuffin - Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. Hmmm, how to answer this question... colours have always fascinated me, and it's by far my favourite part of painting (I struggle more when confined to greyscale), so I just like to experiment alot. Firstly, know your color theory rules, and once you know them, you can break them. Working with complementary colour schemes is always surefire, or you can colour grab from another painting that you like and see where that takes you. If you're having troubles keeping your colours unified, I would suggest starting with some complementary colours (yellow/violet, green/red, blue/orange, etc.), and then doing your whole painting by ONLY mixing with those two colours plus black and white. Just keep truckin' at it, you'll figure it out.
A quick de-stressing painting from tonight. Obviously I cannot abide faces without some kind of markings.
Hello! I haven't been able to post anything in quite awhile on account of INSANELY BUSY. But it's okay though - it hasn't all been for naught, because Lost in Thought, the game I've been working on for school, was selected as one of the top 5 finalists for the E3 College Game Competition.. which is pretty cool, cause uh... we get to have a booth there. And SCAD is flying me and a couple other teammates to LA and that's insane.
I'm honestly pretty proud of this game, particularly considering that it's the first I (and many of the other team members) have ever made. And it's come a damn long way since the first build a few months ago.
So... have some new screenshots!
These first three are from a separate puzzle section, or "memory". This particular memory has to do with a woman's husband cheating on her shortly after their marriage, so there's lots of red, pulsing, and sharp things.
Annnnd some underwater bits (that jellfish is rad, right? I can't take credit for that one though.):
And near the end of the first level:
Soooo... if you happen to be at E3 in a couple weeks... come see us!
I'm finally learning zBrush this quarter, and this is the first character that I'll be sculpting. Pretty excited. I didn't have alot of time to put into polishing this up, so it's a really rough concept. Still, serves the purpose.
Oh, and I'm only sculpting to a little below the hips at the moment. I just can't help but do the full concept. :P
(3 other pages of reference not pictured)
I'll be posting my progress here, so hopefully it's not too awful. :]
Andddd I'm back! It's been too long. Busy transitioning into a new life or whatever. Catchup time!
A personal piece for fun and swirly hair:
And a couple Riak pieces, as per usual. The first is a page out of a sort of guide/overview compliation pdf that I'm making, (here if you actually feel like being able to read it) and the second a constantly-in-progress map.
More updates soon! I have some character concept work to show you guys.
So... I'm modeling in zbrush again. This is kind of terrifying for me, because although I've done it before and really enjoyed it, it's been like 9 months since I've touched it. I've always had a fair degree of anxiety regarding any kind of 3D modeling (got a bad start with Maya in school), so I just kept putting it off. In any case, it's something I want to get good at, so... starting now!
Drew this girl for fun the other day and decided to use her as a starting point at least:
Aaaand after sculpting (and re-learning stuff) for a couple hours after work today, I've got this:
I'm enjoying working with a more stylized approach (more natural for me) and it seems to be going better than expected... I dread the day I actually have to try and remember anything technical though (re-topo!). :P
A little progress tonight. Spent most of my time relearning some stuff, doing UI config, and trying (failing) to get zbrush to run startup according to my preferences. Oh well.
Also got around to dropping in my zmaterials folder. Ahhhh. So much better. :P

I dig the Lost in Thought artwork
Another from today, this one for a part of the level associated with angry memories.

Something oldish that I recently did a re-paint on.
I'm going to be in LA for E3 in 3 days... ack!
I haven't had a chance to draw anything for myself in awhile, so these are just a couple doodles I did last night.
This one isn't my typical style, but it was nice to try something different:
And a super quick self portrait sketch, because I haven't in awhile:

Having never sculpted before, i feel like it's not going too badly.
(Colour is very placeholder right now)
I don't know much about the gameplay but the art style is remarkable.
Aaaand, here's the last of the updates on the Adva model (for now).

Also, a quick self-portrait I did the other day for relaxation.

The inevitable backlog commences:
(WIP):
I have a thing for forests lately.
More tomorrow!
Playing around with some concepts in isometric perspective.
This one was quick and is a little wonky, but I still kinda like it.

A little more work on the tree, plus a new environment painting.
I'm also planning on participating in the Riot Games Art Contest, so I may post some of that here as well as in the other thread.
You can find my official progress thread with notes and such here.
