3ds max destroys uvs

Something weird is happening.
Whenever I touch edit poly, even just press one button my uvs get wiped out.
I clicked "preserve UVs" but no help.

When jumping from an unwrap modifier back to your model make sure to collapse the model or turn it back into an editable poly, the unwrap modifier will disappear but it will save your UV information, then you can reapply an unwrap modifier to access it again.

Yes, but this doesn't help the issue. For some reason whenever I import OBJ with UVs to max and then as much as touch one poly, UVs are gone. Cant do anything atm.

Depends on the way the object was saved. Sometimes i find myself having to use *.Fbx files to keep my UVs. Or maybe post a small portion of your file and we take a look.

Its so strange that if I export the file as OBJ again after editing smoothing groups the UVs are actually in place, but I won't be able to edit them in Max after I have initially touched them.

Can you upload the file or provide some pictures of your stack and your steps? It might be that the object is damaged (had that once when using a file created with an older max), but it also might be a user error. (Since you seem to be not aware what preserve UVs really does - it lets you shift vertices in 3d while trying to imitate that as closely as possible in the UVs)

Some ideas: Maybe one of the uv vertices is infinitely far away?

Did you try a reset xform?

What happens if you apply a new planar uv and export/import that?

How big is the object?

Whats really weird is that if I export this as OBJ or FBX the UVS are there.

Definitely can be user error, most likely so. I am beginner with Max.
I model with Lightwave and use Max as a way to export files with smoothing groups and sometimes to mirror game models. But I am eager to learn
