Creating Illumiation map for workshop item

I have searched the net, but have found no answer to my question. How do you create an Illumination map using GIMP or Photoshop elements?

    You mean self illumination, right?

It's a regular black and white texture if I recall correctly.

You can always extract texture files from the game packages with GCFScape to see how things work. You'd need VTFEdit to convert texture files in this case.

I am aware of this, the problem is the way to use and edit alpha layers and such are work and are applied diffrently in GIMP 2 then in Photoshop and every tutorial i look for just tells me how to do it in photoshop.

Ah ok, I made a misassumption thinking you were using a shared illum mask in the VMT editor.

For alpha channels, I just create the alpha channel in a new layer or another file and merge it using Channel Shuffle. It's free.

I think GIMP is capable of this too but I recall it being inconvenient.
