Why do YOU love 3d?

For me it's the thought of being able to create anything that i want. Knowing that you have power over every pixel, every polygon, every color that exists, and being able to create whole cities, lands and even worlds just if you put enough time and dedication into it.

What is it about 3d that makes you want to master it fully?

I like making games with other people. I like 3D because that's how I can contribute to that endeavor.

Ryan Green made me cry at GDC. "That Dragon, Cancer" is an example what games should be doing in a way. 3D Art coming together to bring it close to our hearts and souls.

I just love the process of creating things in 3D because it always brings new challenges (shapes, proportions, UVs, texturing etc). It very rarely feels repetitive, which is important to me.

I've always loved seeing very detailed things, something that is packed full of realism. I actually started out building real life car models, although that stopped after I got glue on the windows of every model. So I switched to 3d, materials are free, there can be unlimited detail, and I can put the models in games and play with them compared to the real life stuff.

I'm still not good at it, I'm still studying, struggling and learning from other people, but I always feel like it's a part of me, like it's my home, especially when it comes to the game asset production pipeline.

Great to see all your replies, really makes me aware of all the amazing things about 3d that people love. Makes me not want to rush it, but instead craft whatever it is I'm making while being mindfull all the time. I noticed that 3d kinda controls my own happiness. When I surpass my own expectations I feel really good. But when I feel like I'm just failing and wasting my time, my life just becomes sad and meaningless.

Eliminates those annoying perspective errors you get in 2d, and always has correct shadow casting. You might be able to tell I use 3d mostly for 2d overpaints.

I love the insane depth of game art. You can acquire tremendous skills in so many interesting practices. From sculpting to UV packing, there's no ceiling to how awesome you can be as an artist. There's always something new to discover every day, new things to explore and new ways to improve yourself. It's easy to get high on this if you think about it right and treat your failures as an opportunity to learn more.

My love for 3D started 11 years ago, it used to be creating what could not exist in this world, escapism laced with OCD and of course, artistic expression.

Now that i've got my 3D printer up and running smoothly, it's pretty much blurred that line for me. Life is a intoxicated, PLA fume fueled bliss. Currently designing and printing a Pokemon series for the late Satoru Iwata, after all my childhood grew on his creations. Strange to think how far we've come in such a short time, that could just be the fumes talking or nostalgia.

I think what I love about 3d is seeing a character come to life. The tech is moving so fast there is no time to get bored and we are just scratching the surface of what 3d will become. Our grandkids are going to sit around and giggle at the fact that we watched stuff on flat screens

Seeing your 3D model finally rendered and moving in the target renderer/engine with the shading and lighting, thats the payoff that makes all the struggle worth.

Still a few months off hitting my first year of 3D animation study but I'm deeply in love with it. Bringing characters to life is beyond amazing to me, I started with 3D modelling but once I tasted animation, I was hooked.

It provides constant challenge and it's really hard to get bored doing it. There's always just one more thing to learn and do. Plus it has a lot to do with videogames. And as others have already said, money :P

Personally, I got into the 3D because I like making environments/worlds. Creating worlds has always been something that's been around ever since writing was invented. However, now I can share my worlds VISUALLY with others! I fell in love with the idea of making these worlds for players to see and explore.

Also its fun as hell to make multiplayer maps for shooters, IDK why but I love doing that too. Started way back in Timesplitters' 2 map editor on the PS2.

As an environment artist, I've always been fascinated with the idea of thinking of a place in your mind. It could literally be anything, what ever you can possibly imagine, and being able to create it in 3D and actually walk around and explore and share a place that was nothing more than just a thought. Or taking 2D images of places, and recreating them and fleshing them out into a virtual world. To me 3D is one of those "I can't believe this is actually possible" things to me.

Like many here, I like to create things. I like creating worlds and objects that exists in those worlds. But I also enjoy the evolution of the process and the technology behind it. I like how the change in technology also affects workflow, introducing new techniques and tools. For me, there's nothing more exciting than to be able to create the things that you can imagine might/might not exist in some distant future or alternate universe.

I love recreating what i see in real life, especially environments and each time trying to push the realism as far as i possibly can to challenge myself. All the failures can be overwhelming but the taste of success is like nothing else, which is what keeps me going all the time.

I've been doing CG for... None of your business. That's how long. LOL. That said, at this point in my life, I'm always interested in examining what keeps me doing CG.

1. It's often meditative. Once you're in the zone, the rest of the world fades away.
2. I'm a control freak. CG gives me the ability to play god in worlds of my making.
3. Whether it's through stills or animation, I like to tell stories.
4. I like to work with my hands, irl tools and such. CG allows me an infinitely larger and more varied canvas.
5. There's always some new tool or technique to learn. I find that just staying current is mentally stimulating.

Beyond that, I'm constantly interested in pushing my creativity. It's not always easy. I may get into a creative funk where I'm out of ideas or am stuck repeating the same themes. That hurts. You can do a lot of things to try and jump start your creativity, but it can't always be pushed. This is the hardest part for me, staying fresh and motivated. That takes more work from me than mastering any new tool or concept.

If I have to say WHY I first got into CG then it'd probably be my love of comic books and cartoons in the 80s. Also, the whacked out neon excess of the 80s itself inspired me. It still does.

I love 3D because I can create whatever I want. In other words I'm addicted to 3D as hell! Best part is when you work with bunch of people with similar interest making something that someone in future can play it or use it. I don't work in game dev yet, but I bet it's great feeling when you work on something big and after release people comment how this game is good.

Passion is word which can stand next to me.

I love 3D because I am addicted to 3D modelling. If i can remember well, my first ever object that i have created was a simple cone but as I got better and things got advanced i fell in love with it. Now i can literally sit there and spend endless hours just modelling. It makes me happy which is why i do it! :poly142:
