Hey guys! I really appreciate the thread that Jeff Parrot created for the gumroad tutorials (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137585) and I wanted to do something similar for Patreon. Feel free to post others you know of and help me add onto this!

I've marked the ones that seem to focus more on fan art than personal art, ones that are more comic based, and ones that could be considered not safe for work.

    Haha yeah, except for the fact that it must be 10 times more mentally straining than any regular 8 to 5 job ! Nothing comes easy.

    You can't downplay the amount of work that goes into building and maintaining an online social network presence. Making sure that you post on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, DeviantArt, and all the rest is no small feat, in addition to actually being able to produce high quality content on a regular basis. My hat's off to her; she's mastered self-marketing to an amazing degree, and it's paying off.

    she worked years for the fanbase, it's not like any artist with the same skillset and level of eyperience would make this much, in fact i think most will fail. She put a lot into building a strong fanbase over the years and now it pays off.

    There are only few people i could see managing something similar and none of those are 3d folks, maybe troy. But even someone with the reputation like Pior would probably struggle, outside of our artnerd community most people (i guess here, correct me if i am wrong) do not know his work. While Sakimichan had tons of fans outside our little bubble.

    I went ahead and updated the list and marked the patreon pages that are mostly fan art. It seems Kurt Papstein quit his patreon and is now using https://gumroad.com/ikameka if anyone wants to continue supporting him.

    yup, you can turn off your brain for a (9-6) job. This requires to build a fan base, as with twitch or youtube.

    I don't want to start a new thread for this but since this isn't out of context and i've been thinking about this question lately...how good do you think you need to be to start promoting your art, at least to start making your fanbase?

    There's always this thing about "even if someone's work isn't good enough, but it markets himself really well he would probably get more attention or sales than someone's whose work is superior than him but isn't as good marketer as him"

    The other dilemma is that, if your work is constantly improving you will always think than you can do better. Having this feeling that your work isn't good enough to show to the public even if it is.

    I have never been good at establishing any sort of online presence but it seems like the people who do just dedicate all of their time towards their cause. If they aren't working on art, they are engaging the community in forums all around the web. Some of those big money makers have been around for years being active and all that.

    i always listen to her stream and advice. Quite inspiring

    I hope this trend can go on for quite some times not just give you access to unlimited kickstarter deadline. but also give broader perspective on digital art and storytelling standard.
    . I am really waiting for some more indie comic author to join. And hey. Why not indie gamedev?. Id be happy to pay.

    Ok, so I'm actually hitting a weird dillema here. I got this great list that I've been going through and adding and there are a LOT of patreons that are straight up pornographic. I started adding some borderline ones but I'm having a difficult time feeling right adding XXX DRIPPING BONDAGE PONY ON HOT CHICK XTREME to this list. At the same time, I don't know if I should remove all the nsfw because some people mix it up with tutorials or decent art. I'm a little torn because I don't know if it's fair to knowingly not post something because I think it's too much :( Maybe I should create a seperate 'pornographic' category for it? /sigh

    This is just my take on it. But from what i've seen, there are two main type of fanbases you can build. The artist respect driven fanbase, and the general public.

    With the artist fanbases, you just need to be kickass and make amazing work, and people will follow you because of your skill. Most concept artists with followings have this sort of fanbase. Good luck monetizing an artist fan base though.

    For the general public, a few things seem to work. Making a project people care about is the main one. A comic, a story, animation, game, ect. Actual things that aren't just stand alone illustrations.

    Making fanart is kind of like adding to a project, because people already have preconceived ideas about the characters.

    You can also tap into fandoms. Guns, mecha, girls, bronies, furries. They just like seeing art that relates to their fandom.

    Once you are already popular though, that stuff seems to go out the window and people will support you as long as you keep making pretty things it seems.

    If you understand the fanbase you are targetting, you don't need to be mind blowing, just good enough for your target audience.

    I would perhaps start a second NSFW list, and just put a link to it on this page.

    When I was in my twenties, I had a bunch of ideas for comics that I wanted to do, but I kept not doing comics because I felt like I needed to get my art up to scratch first, in order to do justice to the kinds of stories I wanted to tell. And then I hit thirty and I was like, oh my god, what am I even doing with my life, and I got started with my webcomic. I had a few comics go stupid viral but for the most part it has a pretty modest readership of maybe 2k/week.

    That horizon of 'good enough to get started' is one that you'll never reach, whether it's comics or any other kind of personal project you want to do. Just get started now, and if it isn't as awesome in reality as it was in your head, it has the advantage of at least existing in reality, and you'll have learned a bunch of stuff in the process that you can then apply to your next project.

    And while I don't have a massive readership for my comic, in the space of time that I've been making it, I've learned that regardless of your skill level, people respond to passion and sincerity. If you're creating something you genuinely love, it will be reflected in your work, and people are going to be drawn to that.

    And if you're genuine and accessible to people on whatever form of social media you prefer to use, whether it's tumblr or twitter or youtube or on patreon updates or etc., the people who see something in your work that resonates with them are also going to become invested in you as an individual, and that's how an audience grows.

    One thing i forgot to mention in my first post is that getting good at making projects is not the same as being a good artist. It takes time, practice and a lot of failures.

    It's best to make these mistakes as you develop as an artist. As if you don't you'll never start.

    Didnt even know such website existed! Thanks for bringing it up! Might be even worth getting polycount admins to merge this thread with gumroad one and pin it / link them into wiki, so that way people can see them easier.

    Hey guys, I've got one up as well, which I JUST started. I'll be redoing the front page but I've got quite a bit of content I'll be uploading already.

    Mine fits in 2D, fanart and fanart (not safe for work). I'll be doing tutorials on painting with time lapse, mentorships and the occasional not safe for work variant image. I also plan on having a few big names on for doing guest content like John Park and Izzy Medrano (whose Patreons I've helped out with) along with Anthony Jones and quite a few other people who I've already spoken to, once I reach the $1800 milestone mark.

    While I know the answer, I always wonder how the licensing deals would work in the typical IP-to-IP style fan-art patreon, especially when making a grand living off fan-art.

    Thanks David! I've got you up on there :D Very cool idea about the guest content, and congrats on just starting one up.

    Hopefully I'll have my own to join the crowd pretty soon :) Just gotta figure out a point where I won't be losing money on it.

    Hi Guys , my Patreon went live a few days ago. I will be doing full emerssive environments for VR. I am building environments from lots of shows and games i grew up with in the 80s and early 90s as well as my own creations and general hard surface work. First up is a full bridge interior of the sdf-1 from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. Right now i will be building the entire bridge and exterior walkways /war room and any part of the ship you can see out the front windows.

    I may extend to other parts of the ship as well and have many other projects planned after this.

    I started a Patreon account a while back but I don't expect much from it. I suppose I can update it like I do my portfolio sites just to increase exposure. It seems that the most popular artists who do well and who make a living off of it have been practicing their craft tirelessly for many years already, who built their essential fan base and garnered support for a long time for it to all be possible. Most of them are 2D artists and it doesn't look like 3D artists get that much attention, at least so far. I guess everyone has to start somewhere and we just need to keep pumping out more art. That's usually the advantage of 2D over 3D though in that 2D artists can get more work done in less time than 3D artists.
