How get holes in a model with a complex surface?

The problem is that i'm trying to get holes in a model with a pretty complex surface.
So, thit is what i want to do, but i don't know how.

And this is my model.

Can someone tell me please how do this kind of hole in blender (also in maya or 3ds max).

Sorry for the noob question.

Looks like ridges, right? Easy way would be to use booleans.

yeah i already tried with booleans, but the topology is not so great, even when i try to fix it.

No special way to do it, just gotta do it...Use the edge splitting tools to add in new edges and terminate them in triangles.

Try preparing cuts and stuff before you do booleans. Also spend some time on fixing and establishing proper topology after a boolean operation. You mesh doesn't seem very complicated, it shouldn't give you that many problems. Don't try to make everything into quads, it's a fool's errand. Ngons, triangles - it doesn't matter, as long as you have a good subdivided result in the end.

This is the kind of shape that needs fore-thinking before anything is started, now that it is done you could use boolean operations but since i don't like to have tris in my meshes i would rebuild them to my liking with the polytools.

what do you mean? some pictures of your attempt would help - remember topology takes orders from you, not the other way around

there are a few strategies you could use here, booleans are an obvious one, or you could cut the stuff in yourself if the mesh is dense enough, or model the side profile of the blade with the grooves represented and extrude it all back at once. i'm sure there's other ways too

for the ones on the handle i would use booleans because the base object is all compound curves and you really want the grooves to be straight.

at the end i used the knife tool of blender to add the verticles that i need in to my model.
