wanted to inform myself whats better for environment artist's maya or 3dsmax?

Hey,i wanted to know if there is a difference for environment artist's when using maya or 3dsmax,you know like for doing pretty complex buildings with several floors or that kinda stuff thank you again for reading and taking time to answer.

As a matter of fact, I think there is a notable difference ! Snapping/aligning functions are probably the most important tool to an environment artist, and the consensus (as far as I heard, and experienced first-hand) is that those are more powerful in Maya than in Max.

Now of course good stuff is achievable in both, but you might want to test this specific feature for yourself in the demo versions of the programs.

To the OT; It really depends what you are comfy with. You can even use blender for environment props details. I've seen people use Zbrush for environment props detail. Mainly one would say 3ds max and others would say Maya. To me if you know one it shouldnt take long to learn the other that is if you wish to go that route.

use what you are more comfortable with if you have the choice.
both have pros and cons, wich one is better realy depends on wich program you feel better with.

if you are comfortable in max you won´t be faster in maya creating environments, same goes the other way round.

Both, but I prefer some of Maya's features over Max and some of Max's over Maya.

What I like Better about...

Max: Material IDs, UVW Tools, Inset, Extrude, Bevel, Measurements input....

Maya: Hard/Soft Edges, Radial Menus, Snapping...

When hard surface modeling... I literally do swap the model between Maya and Max for when I want to do some operations...

Its like asking what pencil and paper to use, really it does not matter that much - they are both industry standards and ultimately you just need to sit down with one for a few months and get comfortable. The skills are transferable between them so you can always switch.

I used both and I prefer max for modeling and maya for everything else. Also if you will try max then consider using WorkPlane script which works like modos Work plane but this one has more features. It is super useful!

The best thing in max is the modifier stack IMHO!

PS. if you want to try something else then Modo is very good. Using it at work and I like it very much!

I have used max for about six years and started using Maya for about one month ago. So far i think that Max is a much better program when it comes to polygonal modeling. But you can pretty much do same thing in both, but personally it feels like max is smarter and faster when it comes to polygonal modeling.

modeling skills are the same no matter what app, so learn the one you feel most comfortable in. But be prepared to have to learn a the other if you get a job that requires it.
