More progress from last night. I wanted to work on the buffalo/armor before finalizing the hero and get some ideas down.

Still need to mess around with buffalo proportions. I'll also be adding rope along the buffalo's neck for the hero to grab on to.

Thanks everyone! So this weekend I hammered away with the lo-poly creation. I've done the UVs for this guy but its not arranged yet. Will post the UVs when its done.

Here is the lo-poly bake in Marmoset Toolbag 2 and the UV for the hero. Need to do some topology on the ride before moving into doing some Quixel DDO textures.

Yes, I find it useful as well with hard surface models. There are tools in headus that can straighten edges and prevent that soft curvy feel to your UVs.

I did it here on the highlighted area.

Any tips on sizing uv islands/texel density for a project like this? I can't quite tell if you're giving more density to the head or not.

I usually take a moment to figure out which objects I want to have higher resolution, mostly on the upper area of a character. It's obviously easier to give higher density to objects that are a separate element like the hero's shoulder pad. But for a body that has no natural seam, it would be more difficult. So I actually thought about how to hide the seams on his body while at the hi-poly stage.

An example of this is the transition from his head to the chest. Since I wanted to give higher density of the face, I went ahead and made sure he has an object around his neck to hide the seam which is the necklace/neckband.

If there's no objects to hide seams, I just make sure the density is even across. Hope this answer your question.

Oh and I adjust UV island density in Max.

Well here is my attempt at Quixel Suite. Haven't done any actual painting on the image below, just messing around with DDO and Megascans. There are some really nice material presets inside the program and hope to see more in the future.

I'll fiddle around more with DDO and see what I can come up with. Once I've determined the base textures I'll go ahead and finish it off in Photoshop.

Base materials are looking good! One issue so far is that it seems like the gloss/roughness is pretty even between materials, I think you could push that to enhance the different between the various materials, for instance his metal shoulder plate could be glossier to read more metallic and give contrast to the matte materials.

EarthQuake: Thanks for the feedback! appreciate it! Was the first thing that came up when I looked at it the next morning.

Been busy with work the last two weeks and its really been hard balancing work, family, and this comp. But finally got back on this guy yesterday.

I tweaked the values on the texture to make the elements pop more. Will be adding texture detail throughout this week.

I also started rigging the hero and will do the same to the buffalo tonight.
