Hi everybody, this is my first post. I am complete noob in modeling world and I just uploaded my first item to Workshop. It is called "Freeman's pick", this is the first item in the set for Meepo that I have in my mind. I would like some help because I honestly think that my concept of Meepo as a rugged runaway slave miner with long dirty beard and rusty shackles, dressed in scraps would be a nice step away from regular miner sets.

I will submit my item concepts and design in hope that you will give me constructive critics and help me improve my work.

i think you should really avoid those tiny details, because from the in-game view, those details will be disappeared i think

working on the concepts for meepo shoulders and arms, just some rough hand drawings... this is broken barrel left shoulder pad, and a right hand shackle that was originaly chained to meepos pickaxe...

Idea is to have only left shoulder and only right arm slot

Any feedback is welcome ...

The details on the weapon are too small, the wood grain, the damage on the metal pick and the pattern on the handle all will not be visible ingame, I would advise you to look at some of the original textures from the game to see how they do wood and metal details. You should always be thinking about how the player will see the item from an ingame perspective and whether the details you are sculpting will make sense from quite a distance away.

thanks for the tip, I was aiming at displaying only decoration on the botom of the handle as well as meepos original geomancy simbols in self ilumination, for the handle part I will try to emphasise in photoshop. This scultp was more for promo art than anything else. I will post some ingame images and later maybe rework it as you proposed. Thx for feedback

The level of detail you are using is inappropriate for the camera distance of Dota 2. You seem t ofocus on delicate shapes when Dota 2 art is all about bold, graphical shapes. This is because in the game a weapon takes up very few pixels and anything small just becomes noise.

Some examples to look at:

Consider how the chain on your weapon compares to chains on other heroes (Spirit breaker for example). See if you can find a way to make something equally bold for your weapon.

For the wood grain, go bigger and fewer. Any search for hand painted game art should come up with fairly appropriate scale wood grain.

And as for the metal parts, you should focus initially on silhouette and then surface details from there. You have a lot of delicate shapes and acute angles (mainly on the 'front') that wouldn't really read well in game. And what I am assuming is a rivet/nail thing could easily be a much simpler shape and it would be more noticeable from a distance.

Keep at it, I am sure you will get better with revision.

And if you compare what you have done with the art that is already in the game and disagree with me, then that is fine

I am only really a beginner too.

Your wood details are still too small. As you said before "This sculpt was more for promo art than anything else" That is definitely not the right way to go about creating dota 2 items, the MOST important part is how visible the details will be ingame. This is a prime example of why promo art should be standardized.

You can attach the chains to hood bone, (I dont know if meepo has it but he has a hood so he should have). But it will probably not work well, so the if you want it to be perfect tou need to create your own bones llike Tvidotto does.

The details you are sculpting are still too small. Look at this ingame screenshot of Meepo:

As you can see, from that distance, the tiny cracks and bumps on your design will not be visible at all and are in fact counter productive, as they are adding noise to your textures which makes the model less readable.

Try thinking about that screenshot I posted, and consider your design from that perspective as this is how the majority of players will be seeing your model ingame. The most important thing is to get an interesting silhouette and then focus on the large details.

Thx for your feedback m8, i Washington Just trying to think out of te bok. Tko many conventional pickaxes and shovels are on the ws. Perhaps this would look interesting in game, especialy because i am planing to make a set based on using barrel for all items. Amy feedback welcome

You're still applying too much high frequency detail. The wood grain is too small to be readable at a distance and I have no idea what the thing attaching the shovel to the handle is, its too blobby and noisy. Try going down a few subdivisions and smooth the details out

it was suposed to be a piece of wood plank, with a piece of metal sheat nailed to it but you opened my eyes it does look like nothing at all
