Hello POLYCOUNTERS!
this is my first post here in quite some time. its also my first model ive made in FOREVER.
any way i just thought i would post my progress shots here to see if i can get some good feedback from the community
im coming off of my break with an old time favorite who i chose for 2 reasons
the first being that i thought an anime character would be quick and easy(wildly underestimated lol)
and the second is that ive been wanting to cel shade something for forever
at any rate ive completed my base mesh(of which i attached a silhouette and wireframe) and im about to take it into zbrush
i actually was woundering if anybody has any experience with using
normal maps with cel shading, i realize im not going to achieve wild details,
but im aiming more for the style as seen in the games such as raging blast or naruto ninja storm and i heard normals can help with vertex shading so i can achieve just the right look.
the second question that i had is if any body had any tips about
advanced toon shading that they would be willing to share, again im trying to stay as faithful to the 2d counterpart as possible.
thanks in advance for any input

Your knees kneed more edge loops, your elbows probably will too. Check the polycount wiki for limb topo info

now its on to laying out my uvs and get these textures painted in!
for the cel shading i think the normal map is doing most of the work inside of the toon shader, and then i just went into photoshop and added all of the lines
[edit]
heres a little more work to the face and hair, i think im gonna rig and pose this guy now
Hips are too small, waist is too high, head is too round.
fox them and it'll look outstanding
Congrats on finishing
But I feel that the folds could have some extra work. Make them more "vector" like if that makes sense.
i actually had a lot of fun with this one
looking back i would have done a few things a little differently
but ive never done a cel shade like this before so i had no idea what i was doing lol.
i think im gonna retire this for now, but ill definitely pick it back up pretty soon tho
ill address some of what you guys mentioned about the folds, possibly make a super saiyan version.
anyway, IMHO the neck is bit too short
The facial expression in the 2nd to last one looks strange. I think it's the eyes.
nice rendering too
Your texturing and rendering is really good. I believe this needs a little more work, you can push this to be a masterpiece if you add some more character to the cloth. Overall, you have a great start here but if you push it you can get and even better finish. Take what you learn from the advice from this site, implement it into your work, and you will see better results.
Good job
jmt - i was going for one of those explosive looks, the layer group for the eyes in photoshop is named "crazy" lol probably could use a little more tweaking though.
lamar- good points im adressing some of the things. im trying to get SS3 version done by tonight as well
ill come back shortyly with differentl angles, textures sheets etc.
did you a hipoly for this ? can u post it ?
keep it up
ayoub44- sorry no HP to show, i did take this into zbrush but i basically just subdivided and baked normals so the toon shade would pop a little more
now that i have all the forms done i think im gonna play around with a a few renders for each and call this one completed
