LATEST UPDATE:

Posting 2 images for some presonal work I've been doing.
Not much to show yet, just the basic structure of the windows, walls and ceiling.
My main plan is to get inspired to finish this, as I have a hard time finishing personal stuff. I will go slow on progress since I'm not having enough time. But I would like to have some words of encouragement (which believe me, it helps).

Main structures will be done with tileable strips (nmaps, etc) and only lowpoly modeling. Ornaments in some parts will need unique modeling. More to come soon...

There's a bunch of references on the web, and it seems to me that over time they changed some of it's structure. I'm not considering copying the architecture 100%. I'm looking to follow some constrains and make sure it can fit in a game.

Doesn't seem tall enough, the windows should be longer, and the arches in the window do not seem to have enough arch to them. The tables are about a half a person high more then likely so i would use that as the frame of reference for the height.

Well, the modularity is not so much in the mesh, but by the textures that im going for. The windows can be modular, the columns and ceiling. All the rest is unique. It's all considered shell modeling. I don't think I will build any unique modeling for this. We'll see.

Started exporting stuff to UDK, and a first light pass to play with. I hate how bad lightmass does sometimes. Sometimes it's not because of 2nd uv channel, it's just because of how "splotchiness" UDK lighting can do and it's always an issue with such large meshes.

Most of these assets are 256px for lightmap, only the ground is 512px. If anyone know the issue, let me know.

Now I'm on to start doing tileable textures.

Just so we're clear, it's production lighting that's giving you the artifacts, not preview, right? And the lightmass looks acceptable right now. It'll hardly be noticeable when you add your textures, if noticeable at all.

It looks like the proportions in the UDK shot are not the same as in the viewport shot. Mainly the tables and benches seem to be too big. The windows are also a bit squashed. You may want to double check that. Perhaps it is an issue of FOV?

-toolpaddz: hey, yeah, it's the FOV, I'm still trying to figure things out in UDK, both meshes are exaclty the same in Maya and UDK, but that is not final, camera goes later.

Looks lovely but I just have to say the wood on the wall looks brand spankin new but the wood on the floor has seen better days. It just feels like to me inconsistency, just a personal opinion, keep up the great work.

Well, yes, usually in these type of spaces they don't redo the ground, they leave as it is, but the main thing they try to maintain is the walls and most visible architecture. Also the ground people step on it all the time leaving it very old and used. Although, I liked your idea, and I might not make it so contrasted in between them, I think the walls can be a bit less clean then what it is. THanks for the feedback.

Here's the brick wall update that I will use for the walls. Done in Zbrush and Photoshop (mostly zbrush).
I will mix with a blend using depth mask to get more variation.

Looking stellar. You should try playing around with some stain glass windows when you get to that point. Maybe do some cool colored lighting shining through onto the tables and floors. Might be a good challenge for ya.

It's possible, but the lighting is comming from inside, I was thinking more on a night lighting. Perhaps I can do 2 versions, one at night and another at day. Thanks for the comment.

very nice, digging the lighting. Love the depth of the brick wall as well. Though you could try tile it a bit more/less or use texture offset mapping because now the one big stone popping out the most from the normalmap is always right besides the roof struts (is that the right word? Hope you know what I mean), which is kind of killing the illusion.

True, there's 2 things I could do, one of the things I mentioned before was to blend with the depth mask some variation or make it dirty. The other things is to hide or variate inbetween the columns which is just an UV change.

perkins - I'm not sure, I'm not following any, I know there's a bunch online, if you google there are many ways to setup scenes like that or different ways. Not sure how to help you here...

Those Dragonhead lights are amazing and so defined in the light. Did you sculpt it all from one mesh or from multiple base meshes exported from Maya?

maverickhornet - hey, thanks, yes, I sculpted the head of the dragon all in one mesh. The other meshes I used a combination of Maya and Zbrush.

Looking great so far, really nice work. Gotta say that the lights are a little intense at the moment for me, although that may be what you're going for, still looks great but is somewhat distracting. There also seems to be a smoothing error or seam on the pillar furthest to the right, not sure if you've already noticed.

Fantastic either way though, definitely keeping my eyes on this.

So, you have this intence detailed lamp hanger right ontop of and next to the bloddy boring window on the generic stone wall? It seems out of place. It looks great on its own. But putting it in such a grand place like this, it becomes lost and just a small nub to the rest of the scene.
See in your reference how the lamps travel down? Connecting the base and everything? See how they are wide too? They are not bulky enough to demand attention, but big enough to fill the scene and give presence.
The wooden frames that line the wall are dark. Lighten it up . The lighting will do the work for you. Also, those are not detailed enough like the reference pic.
Why should this have detail? Well, if you made that dragon thing all speced out, that detail needs to travel around the scene, giveing it unity. Maybe using a dragon theme? Idk, just balance it out and dont focuse single mindedly on one prop but the scene as a whole.

mazz423 - thx for your feedback man, so yeah, i do know about the seam, you know UDK, if I invert a piece of static mesh it will do that anyhow. Will have to hide it somehow later on. Lights, yes, definately, they are too bright, I wish UDK had the same HDR as cryengine where it would think of the lights as HDR spots. I'm still thinking on what to do on this case.

whats_true - hey, thanks for your feedback, but as you know, things are still work in progress. Not that I'm trying to explain my mistakes here but to add the detail I first need to see how things are going to composite first. As for the windows, yup, for some reason when I have them lit, all the detail of hard edges on it are gone, I might have to split the hard edges on the 2nd uv set so I we can see the seam where it needs to, as it shows too smooth. Also, later on I will add stained glass windows which will add more detail to the picture. Blending textures with a bit of dirt and stains will also do the deal.
Reminder, not sure if you read the first post, I'm not anyhow intending to do EXACTLY as the first ref. The wood on my other refs are very dark, but I can tweak that.

Yes, things are very repetitive. My plan is to blend some grime on the bricks and put some variation on the wood. If theres time I will also want to do a destroied version.

quick update:

- added variation to the brick walls
- added variation to the wood (if you notice, there's less spec wood, and a bit dryer than the common one).
- Fixed seams where the columns and the wood parts were showing
- lighting updated, a bit of variation.
- postfx, yes, I did add the light shafts, who doesnt right?
