Sketchbook: Bigphun

Hi Polycount, I've been lurking for a year or so as I tried to teach myself a little about modeling, I'm not a student -not a 3d student anyway- but more of a hobbyist. Hopefully posting some work and getting feed back will help motivate me as I've never actually finished any digital work.

Anyway I've been fooling around in Silo mostly, but recently downloaded some Autodesk student software, I'm too intimidated by Maya and Max, but below are my first two efforts in Mudbox.

Here's another practice bust, it was suppose to be a goblin but something about it says troll. In any case, if I keep this up at all expect me to work my way through a good portion of the D&D Monster Manual.

The Monster at the top is a Yaun-ti Abom, but it turned out a bit more dinosaur like in the head

I'd like to put some leather armor on it and give it some hands but I'm not sure how to add to the mesh or if it's even possible at this point, any ideas?

Heres a new one, I'm going to have to make a new base model for my busts I think, because I I never have the geometry to do ears and the eyes are always a bit rough.

I was really having a lot of trouble on the outside corner of the eye and the way the brow flows into it but I think I have it nearly figured out, though, if anyone wants to post a helpful paint over that would be super.

Also I think this female bust is a lot less androgynous than the last so thats progress.

I almost forgot, I reworked my Yaun-ti abomination's head. I like the old one, but it seemed more like lizard folk than a snake.

I really wan't to finish this model but I feel I need to sketch up a concept before I go any further and I've been too busy making heads and trying to learn the tools.

So I scrapped the old model and built a new base mesh with a hood, I swear I'm going to sit down an sketch something up in photoshop.

Here's a base mesh I was going to use in Mudbox. I don't know how important the topology is if I'm going to sculpt on it, but pointing out any obvious problems might be helpful anyway.

Heres my compulsory old man head, maybe 1.5hr sketch.

I'd love to get into greater detail, but besides not having the skill, I have serious performance issues with mudbox beyond 750k or so polys. I'm not really sure I know how to make the most of layers, and hiding part of the model often doesn't help.

Here is a crude paint over, creating a concept is extremely challenging for me, I guess I'm just not very creative.

I'm going for some kind of victorian swashbuckler, but I don't really like how all the plates float and don't really seem to fit together.

So I feel like I'm not making any progress and that I've jumped into the deep end before I could swim.

As that paint over made pretty clear, I can't digitally paint for shit, so that seems like a good place to start, and hopefully by practicing that I might find a visual style that suits me.

Here is a fast and moderately successful portrait of Barbara Palvin, Though next time i wont chose a reference image with so little contrast
