Can anyone help tell me whats missing from this tutorial?

Hello,

I am trying to do pretty much this tutorial. http://chrisholden.net/tutor/arch01.htm

The stairs part.

My understanding of it. Is he builds the stairs as one object. The dirt mesh as another object. Then poof its together somehow. (Assuming this is the baking part? But how do you do that part?)

Whats the step to bring the dirt mesh and the stairs object together to form a low poly stair object? I've asked everyone I could so hoping someone here can help me out!

Id really appriciate it thanks!

Merge or group the high-poly stairs and dirt mesh, and use that as the high-poly reference when baking to a low-poly mesh. The how-part of the bake depends on what application you're using.

I'm using 3dsmax 2010 so I want to be using the render to texture method?

Google 3ds Max Normal Map baking...there are myriads of tutorials to find...some of them here on Polycount...also have a look at the Polycount Wiki...should be helpfull, too.
