So, im trying to dive face first into the world of sculpting and high poly and finding myself drowning haha
Doing my best to sculpt and read through a book on Zbrush, but not being able to do what I want at this point is discouraging in of itself. With that being said, I'm trying to keep my game face on and know that I didn't get good at 3D art in a day, and sculpting is a whole new realm; patience is not only a virtue is required.
What program would really serve me best in learning first would you guys say? Zbrush then Mudbox or Mudbox then Zbrush? Zbrush seems pretty nice and probably better suited for better sculpting, however, I know Mudbox is pretty big in the industry too. The only thing that really irks me about Mudbox is it seems more vertex manipulation based. Is there a way to change this by chance?

It's simple and straight forward.
If you've only ever used Zbrush, then I would suggest trying out other sculpting packages. Try 3D Coat too.
Do you know if there is a way to sculpt by pushing faces as well in Mudbox rather than vertice only? kinda the only thing really keeping me from getting into mudbox more
3D coat is awesome for beginners too, much cheaper and sculptris is great too.
I'm just talkin' tho because I am also not good at sculpting, the above is easier said than done. Holding yourself to that is killing!
Pixologic has been giving me free upgrades since I purchased Zbrush almost 5 years ago.
Its the first 3d app i learned and solely trough the internet.
It looks like a alien at first but you get to love it pretty quick.
Its like E.T.!
I personally feel more comfortable with zbrush, lotsa brushes.
Mudbox is easy to use for texturing and pipeline integration.
It's freeware and is quick to download. It's more user friendly than a spoon
