I've grown tired of Roadkill; I'm looking for more sporty, current software for unwrapping my lowpolys. A few folk have talked one thing up or the other so I wondered what folk here are using these days?
For high and triangulated objects (3d scans), Unfold 3D saved the day many times and was by far the best bet, way above UV layout.
I'm not so sure about low poly, but it worthes the try.
Still a big fan of Blender's UV tools. Also seeing more people pimping Zbrush's UVmaster, at least for generating the initial uv islands and then tweaking them elsewhere.
Thirding or is it fourthing? Unfold3D. Owns bones. For simple stuff if you're a max person, I still use the microcan UVhelp script. The site is down but I've mirrored it on mine here: http://www.poopinmymouth.com/process/uvHelpV201.mcr
I mostly stick to some of the newer tools included in max 2012 and up. With the constant cycle of updates from Autodesk every April I have sort of fallen out of love with 3rd party plug-ins unless they are critical to my workflow and super easy to install and keep updated. Nothing quite like waiting 4 months after max releases for some guy you paid 4 years ago to finally get around and update the script/plug-in.
I mostly use point to point seam selection, then relax.
Or peel/quick peel based on face selections, then use point to point seam selection to cut seams and relax tension.
I use TexTools + Max2012's new set of tools. Seems to do a good job for me. There may be faster solutions out there though, I haven't tried too much else.
uv layout. I bought a dongle license a year ago and I am happy with it, but yeah there is a learning curve, as everything is done with shortcuts.... Also, I am not sure in your case, but at work I switch often between max, xsi and maya, so its good not having to learn to unwrap in every different app. Because with uvlayout you have import plugins that make your workflow smooth.
I'm going to resurrect this thread to share what I just found out. Unfold3D was the most suggested UV unwrapping software in this thread, so I looked it up and it looks like it's going to be a native plugin for the imminent Maya 2015. Neat!
Someone correct me if im wrong but scaling in the uv editor of max 2014 is broken. You cant scale in both x and y directions. It only does one or the other.

Yea it is odd, though a.f.a.i.k. max's uving has always had problems for me it was always a headache and i fought through it every-time, idk why lol (probably no chance for other options really.
Edit:
now i do a combo thing with zbrush's automation and maxes, z flattens them in max i sort them.
Thats.frustrating haha. The even more frustrating part is I redownloaded Max12 and it got updated with some of Max14's upgrades including this wonderful uv editor lol. It was just fine before I messed with it. I can only blame myself :-( but I have no idea why Autodesk upgraded their older versions.
Those shortcuts work outside of freeform mode also, with just the scale tool selected.
There was one release of 3dsmax (I think it was 2012) when they switched the default behavior of the scale tool to non-uniform scale and everyone went nuts and they patched it a few days later putting it back to the way Pac posted.
Thanks Pac! My old version of Max12 didn't have any shortcuts to scaling. Just select Scale or Free form and it uniformly did it. Right now the shortcut isn't working with Scale mode, just in Free form mode. In Scale mode Ctrl just combines uv selection like in editable poly.

Probably overkill for just unwrapping if you're on maya already though

You need to hold down CTRL to scale on x and y.
Holding SHIFT will scale on either x or y, depending on mouse direction.
