If you have two subtools overlapping one another is there a way to make one apply a mask at the areas where they intersect? Sort of like a boolean operation but instead of subtracting/adding geometry it subtracts/adds masks.
A way to transfer masks between two objects with similar shapes would be useful too.

For similar shapes, you could try turning the mask into grayscale polypaint data and projecting it onto the new one.
EDIT:
I found this on Zbrush Central posted by Marcus. Not really a 1 click solution but better than nothing.
1. Turn on Ghost transparency. The subtool you want to mask should be selected and the subtool you want to do the masking should be visible.
2. Select the ZProject brush. Make sure just RGB is turned on.
3. Paint over the subtool. The one you want masked will become black wherever it is covered by the subtool.
4. Press Tool>Masking>Mask By Intensity (under Mask By Color).
5. Turn off Tool>PolyPaint>Colorize to see the mask.
Know this is an old post but saved me alot of trouble
Thanks for a good fix
