how to collapse layer styles photoshop

Is it possible to collapse layer styles in photoshop, in a way that the layer styles effect stays, but the layer itself returns to a normal non-styled type. I find it irritating when using layer styles and trying to edit the result, and the layer style adapts procedurally to my edits..

i usually make a blank layer under the styled layer and merge the styled layer down, but thats tiresome and there has to be a better way.

Making a blank layer and collapsing is probably the fastest method, but just make those few clicks into an action to make it even faster.

Right click the FX icon > create layer?

That way it'll make a new layer for your layer effects.
