Here's a gun I mashed together for a class. I'm not really a concept artist, so bare with me. The overall idea is there (silhouette and what shapes are on top of other shapes), but it's going to change as I model it.
@Hayden Zammit, he said he mashed it together which I think means he built it using the reference and smashing it together in photoshop and then painting over (correct me if I'm wrong though Burton), which is still cool I'm pretty surprised you and Kevin managed to make concepts that look like stand-alone pieces out of the ref you had. I don't think I could pull that off, plus mine kind of deviated pretty far from the ref which means more work for me when it comes to figuring out the little details at the end >.<
Anyway my only issue with it right now is although it looks cool, it still doesn't scream "Laser Pistol" to me yet, I think it's because despite it's futuristic pieces it still feels like a traditional pistol shape wise, which makes me think it shoots bullets. I might add some sort of ammo container that alters the silhouette a bit and also emphasizes that this gun does not shoot bullets.
Yeah, it works basically how Nistrum says haha. And the ammo is supposed to be that black cartridge on the bottom of the gun in the front. It's supposed to either be an energy magazine or a battery, either way, I did a horrible job illustrating that haha. Emissives should really help also. Thanks for the crits everyone.
I feel like the grip could use some more definition as being a grip, some ridges and stuff to make it a bit more ergonomic, but I love the direction you too it because now it looks a lot more sci-fi and different, whereas before the grip seems so close to a modern gun in terms of silhouette that it wasn't reading as sci-fi to me.
I might also try and get just a tiny bit of those blocky shapes into the handle even if they're only cut in slight relief just because while it reads more as sci-fi, the handle seems detached from the gun since it's so curved it doesn't tie in well with the rest of the gun yet.
So here's an update, I went back a little and tried to establish what I really wanted. I still need to get the grip in there. I'm also having trouble thinking about good ways to break up the shapes I have still.
Small update, getting ready to unwrap the low and bake normals after I get the handle and other details figured out more. Comments and crits appreciated.
Thanks Snader, here's a full sheet of the gun with the main views. I'm finished with it for now, but I'll come back to it later as the project is over for the class to polish up as a portfolio piece. Comments and crits are more than welcome, I want to make this even better.
@Barnesy: I only baked the gun about 10+ times to get it finally clean, especially when I was dealing with smoothing group errors. And as far as the normal map detail like the holes, I added them separately. I baked out the details on a flat plane and added them in Photoshop one by one; I think that's why it came out really clean too.
@Pivot: Thanks! Yeah I did finally figure out something for the grip with the help of a friend. Still more to do on it, but there are other projects waiting

Thts my guess. Looks cool though

Glad you figured out that grip! The circular handle didn't look too holdable.
