Hey, there!
Ive been posting some minor stuff on WAYWO before, but this is my first very own thread.
I made this concept a while back for a challenge at conceptart.org and i thought it was time to try and build him. I basically only have time working on this on weekends, since school is taking up all my week time, som im not entirely sure im gonna finish it. Anyway, its my first real z-brush character project, and i was thinking of making with Infinity Blade kind of specs. As ive understood, Infinity Blade means about 8k tris, but i dont know about the texture sizes, so if anyone could fill me in, that would be greatly appriciated.
So heres the concept and goal:
And heres the progress so far:
Any comments, advice and critics is appriciated

Some more progress..
I need to be cautious not to rush this through, as i usually focus more on speed and efficiency rather than top notch quality in all aspects. This piece, however, ill try and make my lovechild and id really like to make the concept justice.
Ive had a hard time actually fitting all the parts under his surcoat without making him look to bulky. I had to go back to the body mesh and make him skinnier. Im still not fully at home in zBrush, and i find especially working with the surcoat kinda difficult as it tends to either intersect or float outside of the body
Any thoughts on the surcoat, the pants, the sweater and the face are very welcome.
Nice progress on sculpt too
Thats racist!
... Sorry.
george clinton / sam fisher right there
Anyway, another weekend - another update. I Gave him glasses, chains with crosses and changed the general shape of his hair.
For the chains i downloaded this great MEL-script from Creative Crash that i highly recommend trying out.
Next is polishing his pouches and houlster.
Again, thanks for all the praise of the concept. And any c&c on the modelling is very welcome, as im not really used to making characters
You should remove crosses, and replace them with more fantasy symbols. It will give more paladin feel then.
I think i agree with you on the chunkyness. I must have lost it while moving the main part of the hair weight to below the headband.
i think il do the duct tape mostly in a heightmap in photoshop.
a last update before going to sleep:
see you next weekend!
No

Patiently awaiting more awesomeness.
looks cool so far dood!
technically its not a monkey but a lemur, wich ist a prosimian primate ( i just looked it up).
And yes, il make him. By the looks of this thread, id evoke a lot of disappointment if i didnt.
Are our torches and pitchforks showing? Lemur + door = two best props ever
thanks!
to avoid getting lynched, heres a lemur:
made in about an hour from a dynamesh. (i used "insert hand" for the hands and feet, but dont tell anyone!). Im not really sure how far i can take the lemur in zBrush, since i think the textures and fur-planes are gonna do most of the work. I think all i need so far is basic anatomy and proportions.
I havent really sculpted animals before, so let me know what you think.
the door will have to wait for maya.
the fro stays! But thanks, man.
trimmed down and defined the beard a bit to make him look more righteous. Also gave some detail to the fro.
Now its time to colorize the big parts in zBrush and bring him to my maya in school for the lowpoly work. Im gonna try out the new diamant-tools.
I build my low poly on top of a midpoly ref in Maya. I find it helpful to continously bake the normals from the midpoly to the lowpoly to make sure Im on track - hence the wired normalmap on the image below.
Well, Thats it for today folks. Not sure if I'll be able to work with this tomorrow but I've set up a goal to myself to try and finish it next weekend.
Thanks man! I made him from dynamesh, it was super effective.
the lemur is currently 2k with about half being in the hands and feet, something i should probably reduce a bit. there are 512px textures on these images, but I will probably shrink em to 256 to fit my Infinity Blade res goal.
let me know what you think!
Try making a blank map and starting lighting on it own, or else just preview it in the animset editor.
