Putting together a scene for the ol' portfolio. I realized that when Fall of Cybertron releases I'm going to have a ton of sci fi work in my portfolio. Although i love sci fi more than life itself, I need some variation. So to avoid that I'm going to do this scene. I had done a scene like this in college but it was horrible. I'm a huge fan of the 40's and 50' so i decided to do a 1940's ale house on a NYC street. I'm going to have some modular apartment building pieces, water towers, fire escapes, shipping trucks and just various props to get out of doing so many sci fi things.
That apartment front is of course placeholder for now. Going to start populating the scene with props for awhile. GIving myself plenty of time to finish this since I'm pretty swamped working on this sci fi short film.

And yes...that is brody ale.

Thanks for the love guys
Some nice materials you got going. I can't help but feel that the barrels are a little bit too "egg" shaped, unless you're going for a bit of a stylized touch.
I cant wait to see the wires and flats for this
Next up going to start the ale house front entrance.
Still deciding what i'm going to do with the left part of the scene. Not sure if i'm going to show that cross street or just show this row of stores/apartments. I'm also thinking of actually making the windows transparent so you can barely see inside the ale house. Not too much but something like reference image i posted.
I think im not going to do a cross street and just make the final piece this row of stores and apartments. Just so i can focus my efforts on a small area and make it the best that i can.
Thanks for all the love guys!
Going to be making the windows and fire escape next.
A quick master mat with and a couple instances with a multiplier on the diffuse to get some darker and light barrels would break it up nicely.
would be nice to break the pavement up abit (im sure you will at some point anyways i know its a wip)
maybe a drane or manhole cover might help some guttering on the building too would be nice
Yeah i'm going to create some material instances for the barrels later on. Right now I'm just doing broad strokes to get the color palette and feel down.
Also going to set the pavement up for some vert blending and decals to break it up.
Looking forward to seeing it progress.
Going to try to fit the sign in this weekend too
Trying to think of a clever name for the ale house but im awful at being clever haha.
Damn you gods of cleverness...why didn't you bless me with wit!
Textured up the fire escape and windows. I'm having alot of fun with this project! Going to probably move on to the next building before i start adding props to this building. Keeping with the broad strokes.
Enjoy!
joebount: I didn't even think about that for reference!! Good call!
^^
Keep up the hard work Looking forward to more!
The windows arent textured yet, just laying them in to make sure the colors work well in the scene.
Just a heads up. I am going to do a post process pass at the end to try to recreate that old photo look as you can see from my reference images. Going to try to find a nice balance between it as to not take away from the scene.
Also plan on putting a plant in the front of that big open window so it doesnt just look like a black hole hah.
your bricks -i thought there might be a chance that you could be referencing bricks that were like that.
but seeing your ref you've definitely made them far to square, they need to be a lot more rectangular imo : ]
