It's so easy to get tunnel vision as an artist. Which is why breaks to come back with fresh eyes, and getting others to look at stuff is so important. It's amazing how often we can completely overlook things that would otherwise be obvious.
And that's why Polycount is one of the best corners of the internet.
This piece gives me artistic wood, @jonas-144.
And the fact that there are so many people offering little critiques is testament to how a lot of people want to see this completed with you
Edit: For the record, I quite like the blown out lighting as it has a nice Tuscan feel to it.
Rai: Okay never heard of it but it looks nice
Hope it worked out with the vertexpainting
pseudoBug: Yea I get what you where going for. I tried adding some more blue but
it started to look a bit too "retro" or toycameraish haha:).
Hope you like the new update, I tried making it a little less contrasty and dark
(not sure if its really visible though)

Totally agree with you and SirCalalot!.
And it's really interesting to see what other people see and notice in your work.
Just a small uppdate nothing major.
- I fixed the bridge
- added some small stuff here and there.
- added small villages in the distance and made a watershader .
- Added some particles. Like the smoke
- Fixed the wheels
I tried different lighting setups and different colours during the weekend.
But I always ended up liking this one the most.
I like how it makes some of the colours really pop and make it feel like an old painting
The other results I got were all pretty nice too, but they all felt a litte flat and boring.
So I guess it's pretty much finished now (or it has to be haha)
Have to finish up my porfolio and start looking for internship
I will post a video of it too this weekend I hope.
And even tough its "finished" I might still post some uppdates. And a nightversion perhaps
So if you see something wierd please do tell !
Its been really fun posting it here and I'm really greatfull for
all the comments and tips I've gotten along the way.
You guys have been really helpfull, thank you so much!!!
It's an awesome scene, I hope you don't have a hard time breaking in, otherwise the rest of us might have some difficulty. :P
I know you're not really looking for more critiques, you can nitpick and tweak forever/(true art is never finished, only abandoned) But the added smoke is a huge detractor in my eyes. It's really artificial looking and resembles a couple of spikes coming out of the roof. Real smoke dissipates and gets larger as it comes out, and it never comes out in a perfectly straight line.
Also, I think smoking chimneys sort of conflict with the overall feel of the picture. Warm sunny Italian countryside. The houses become less inviting, and feel more like they might be hotter inside rather than cooler.
If it were me, I'd just pull out the smoke and leave it the way it was.
sorry for being so late with the replies i've had a lot to do this past week=/. pseudoBug: After tweaking the smoke for a while I though a straight thin line looked best. Thicker smoke looked a bit to distracting. But I totally agree with you, Ill try n make it fluffier:). And also I think it may be a bit too dark.
I just find that the edges of the cracks on you rocks are too bright, and SSAO still looks a bit to strong in some places. But anyway, amazing job, I love the textures, especially the brick wall !
Hey jonas-144 the scene looks really cool and is taking off very well and I like where you're going with this but there are a couple of things I'm noticing right off the bat that can be some fairly quick fixes for you and will really take your project to another level. I've been to areas like this in Sicily and Italy in the past and I thought I could offer some friendly advice and critique for you. In these area's the sun is pounding 24/7 almost relentlessly, and it affects everything. The stones of the bridge would be bleached almost white, they have a little too much color in them. Also I noticed the square stones being stacked to line the walls of the bridge, the people there never have the money to afford those kinds of stones, it would look more realistic if you made them like the ground of your bridge with the placement of the rounder stones strewn in concrete. The stream you have is really rare but it does happen, but the water should be a great deal clearer. You really don't see blue water anywhere there unless you're at the coast looking out at the oceans in those regions. Lastly I'm noticing the plains on either side, you could break those up more with wheat. It really grows like grass over there and you generally don't see an open plain like that, it always is littered with jagged rocks and boulders and overgrown with wheat, grass, or other weeds and they are always dry and begging for water. The tree you were experimenting with I actually really liked. It reminded me of the farmers who grew almond tree's next to their houses, and they were on raised hills and mounds like that, they also grew strawberries next to and around them. If you can get it working it would be a really great addition to the piece. Other than those areas I think you have a really awesome project going on. It brings me back there and is working out really well for you it seems. Good job, keep at it and good luck.
Your sense of depth is great, the burred out background really gives a sense of the air being hot. Some soundbytes of singing cicadas and it will be perfect.
I have to say though, some of the stone looks too dark in the bridge. In Spain and really hot parts of Italy you'll notice that alot of the rock is either copper-red or an off white/brown, maybe adding something that looks like mildew would help?
It's really gorgeous, I can't wait to see as it progresses.
Even though it's realistic, you can defiantly see a personal style in this work. Really amazing. I have been showing this thread off to people going: "can you believe this is real time graphics?"
Really nice work! Would love to run around in it with some funky TimeSplitters characters for some reason. Might be cause I love TimeSplitters and this reminds me of it.
The nitpicking is as others have mentioned. The background lacks in some areas and the smoke from the chimneys is not up to par with the rest.
For me, this is another standard setter, in terms of what can be done with UDK in realtime. It reminds me of Red Dead Redemption, and looks really inviting. Really gives me the inspiration to persevere with my own little projects between UDK & Max, knowing that if I stay commited, I'll be able to make scenes as good as this one day! Thanks
Man this looks so cool. I only started out working on 3D art recently. So I'm curious how much is your modeling and texturing and what is done with the help of UDK. I'm not really familiar with UDK yet. Although from what i see here I really should get into using it
Wow really nice stuff, your scene has really improved. For me it might be a little too bright for my liking but great job overall. I need to learn from you :P
Nice work! only critisism i could find would be to dirten the bridge a little bit, to make a better transition from the dirt path to the stone texture. Looks amazing

About that cypress tree... Are the leaf planes rendered hipolys or did you just paint it and masked it?
It doesn't matter too much as it's taken me four months to notice.
But it has been seen it cannot be unseen
You did a very good job !
Is it possible to make a video out of it ?
You could move in the environment with a kind of FPS view ?
Anyway, love the mood of the scene.
It looks really nice.
I love to see works like that done with UDK when we cant guess thats done with it.
Is the small rock floating a little?

I love UE3!
keep up the good work
I don't see any smoke in this scene but i guess it's a matter of taste.
