Following some suggestions I updated the placement of the characters in the scene, so that they don't overlap as much. I updated the images in the first post accordingly, does it look any better?
Lovely treatment - I would so fork out for a tactics mass effect game on ipad or handheld - it could be awesome fun! This would be how it would look of course - beautiful stuff.
