Hi,
I have recently just started a part time course, MA Computer Graphics for Games Development. This course is run with Bournemouth University.
As part of my research for the first module I wish to gauge what it is people enjoy about a racing game.
If you have time to answer the questions below it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Answers will be collected in 7 days.
Please choose one answer only for each question.
Now on survey monkey to make it easier.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JVKHX6SWhat is the most important element of a racing game to you?- - Speed
- - Environment/ Tracks
- - Vehicles
- - Competition
- - Hot laps / Time attack / Time trial
What genre of racing games do you prefer?- - Simulation
- - Arcade
- - Action
- - Off Road
- - Street Racing
- - Combat
Would you consider a racing game that does not feature vehicles?Which of these additional gameplay elements would you like to see in future racing games?
- - Combat
- - Strategy ( in relation to optimal route finding through complex environments )
If you wish to add some further information or expand on your answer itll be welcomed.

Arcade
Yes, would greatly depend on the subject matter though.
Strategy

2. Street Racing
3. No (Then its just humans running)
4. Strategy
Could be rabbits for all we know.
also, no problem.
-arcade
-depends (no athletic/running stuff)
-neither
i had more something like snowboarding in mind, which isnt bad at all
I'd play that!!
Rabbits are fast and can cut corners
I did to but a snowboard would count as a vehicle like a bike or skateboard
That's the purpose of the questionnaire is to determine what is it exactly that people like about racing games. Is it the speed and challenge or the vehicles ?
If vehicles are out what can be used instead ? It's pretty open really. So rabbits are one option as are humans. The thing missing is the speed. I'm sure some fictional setting consisting of cyborg rabbits would sort that out :P
In all seriousness there may well be some very interesting options out there.
I should have clarified by vehicle I mainly mean the automotive kind as they are the most common.
The module is about game concepts and development and will result in a key image for a game and a pitch presentation. I'm currently seeing if a different approach can be taken to the racing genre.
2. Simulation (The more real the better)
3. Yes but it depends on what we are racing... racing on bananas would be strange.
4. Combat (Remember the old Rock and Roll Racing game)
Hope that helps!
/cheers
- Combat
- Yes
- Combat
I'm not sure what you plan to get out of this survey. The questions don't seem very well thought out. 4 questions isn't a lot so I'm not sure you'll be able to do anything with the results. Also the 2nd and 4th question should have all the same or similar answers, which makes one of them pointless really.
Surveys I did on my degree consisted of about 20 questions, dont ask too many questions and don't make them long winded, else people wont do the survey. Also, you can make free and simple surveys online which make it easy for people to answer and you get charts and stuff to work from. I'm not sure which ones are best these days but heres one.

- - Speed
Mainly related to gameplay, it should be fun and speed is fun. What genre of racing games do you prefer?
- - Arcade
Would you consider a racing game that does not feature vehicles?- - Yes
Skateboards, Bicycles, Trolleys ^^Which of these additional gameplay elements would you like to see in future racing games?
- Combat
Mutilation? Dismemberment? Wicked fun ragdolly stuff.- Vehicles
"What genre of racing games do you prefer?"
- Simulation
Vehicles and simulation go hand in hand for me, accurate representation of a vehicles traits, and how it performs under certain conditions is quite a large factor for me.
"Would you consider a racing game that does not feature vehicles?"
- No
I love mechanical things, especially vehicles, whether boat, plane or car.
"Which of these additional gameplay elements would you like to see in future racing games?"
- Strategy
I was going to say neither, but i have played some offroad racing games - which required you to navigate and pick a route best suited to a good time, and not getting stuck / breaking something - was quite enjoyable.
In reply to Stinger88, I agree there are not a lot of questions but this is intentional. The questionnaire is only one line of research I'm doing that will aid me in refining some ideas I have for the module and clarifying the direction I will take.
I'm only 4 days into an 8 week module so after the initial research is carried out I'll be researching and working on one topic. I just need to narrow it down to one asap.
I'll investigate surveymonkey
Thanks
My perfect examples would be FlatOut Ultimate Carnage and Burnout Revenge for 360. Both of them were just one furious, exhilerating experience right to the end, with pretty much everything done right.
BTW, Beetle Adventure Racing is probably the best racing game ever. (Or is it Burnout 3?)
street racing (randomized traffic)
no
strategy (goes with teh street racing. street racing games should be get from point a to point b, heres a gps on your dashboard... GO)
For those who replied and were even remotely interested on what came out of this here's the final image.

Obviously there was a 6,000 word document and additional artwork to back it up. Some of the other artwork is available in the same gallery.
