Hey Folks
I usually create my diffuse textures by layering different elements together then setting the blending mode to Luminosity to take on the color characteristic of my base color/texture.
Usually when my textures are done they are too my liking but lacking in color variation.
So I am curious to see how others use photoshop to re-introduce color variation into their textures.
What I have been doing is duplicating the texture then hue saturation adjustment to a different color than adding a layer mask and rendering black and white cloud filter into the layer mask to reveal randomly some of the new color through to the original layer.
Any ideas on better ways to do this?

Well duplicating the texture seems a bit destructive. Try an adjustment layer. They are an adjustment in a layer form that you could then add a mask to. Advantage is that you can always go back and tweak the hue/saturation values.
Sorry for the dumbed down explanation but I don't want to assume you know, you know?
:P
I also saw this a while back...

He has a color noise map that he overlays...
Personally I tend to paint in "normal" mode nearly exclusively. Some special things I need require overlay or hard light, but most often I'm using normal mode and masking.
Adjustment layers are a great idea for corrections.
Also search this forum for "photoshop brush" and you should find a whole topic with people posting their custom brushes. I posted links to a slightly modified set of the Nagel Series of brushes.. from some image editing site. Some of them are great, as they include hue or saturation variation directly in the brush.
