Because I'm unoriginal and a slave of my ways, I started doing a weapon retexture project for TES V: Skyrim, much like the one I worked on for Fallout: New Vegas.
Most of the weapons ingame are 512x256 or 512^2, so it's pretty necessary for any first person players.
I started doing them yesterday and I already released the first thing (Iron Battleaxe)
i loved your work from new vegas. the axe is cool but i have some points:
1. i think the occlusion between leather and wood is too strong
2. wood and leather really seem to have the same color - more material differences would be cool
3. the metal structure looks a bit blobby/round - remembers me on LARP weapons where the "metal" parts are made of latex...

Thanks for the pointers Simon, I'll keep it in mind! This is certainly a learning experience as the material is a lot different than I'm used to & I'm a noob to sculpting (prolly why it's so blobby and not very sharp)
I would go a bit easier on the metal. You're using one of the hard surface brushes in Zbrush to get that hammered look, but a dagger is fairly small and that would have to be an even smaller hammer. I would try to do it less uniformly over the surface and keep it to a few areas.

Looks good though
I'll keep that in mind for the next one, thanks! I actually use 3dcoat which isn't as nice for hard surface stuff at least, but it has that neat auto voxel retopo which is a lifesaver when sculpting messy meshes
The hammer indets should be bigger. It's great with the small ones, but they disapear most of the time course of more powerful blows. What you have done is something that would be found on a copper sword.
My brother is a blacksmith but he's site dosn't really show that many closeups. Here one that shows some of it.
Btw, look at the intersecting parts. There not really one piece.
Thanks! The reason it's all in one piece is because I just imported the default model into 3dCoat and ran the automatic voxel retopo which kinda merges it together, since I can't be arsed to do every single weapon "properly".
I'll keep messing with the hammer indents, then. Keep the tips coming, guys!
The quality of your work is amazing just like all the other artists on here I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Do you model your weapons low poly as a base first then go into sculpting with all the detail?
If they were my own I would, but with these I'm taking the vanilla low poly, mucking with that in Max, importing into 3d coat with its automatical voxel retopo, a quick smooth pass then sculpt the shit outta it :P
Looking good man. I just got that dagger and I wish I had this one. If anything I'd say the hilt looks like you didn't spend as much time on it as the other parts.
duuuude this is awesome, i love the blacksmith feel you have on each weapon with the small hammer indents. I agree with strOlsson, also his brother is a friggen blacksmith haha...but those mini hammer indents wouldnt be so pronounced, wash em away with some larger hammer indents. It looks sweet though!
You mind uploading a small video on how you do that awesome hammer blacksmith sculpting?

Sure, I'll record a small bit the next time I do an iron weapon
Those look amazing! 512 is so small, really thought the textures would be more high-res to start with. Unfortunately I run the game on console, would love to use your textures. A question: Does anybody have some information regarding weapon polycount in skyrim, Would be interesting to know how many tris a typical sword has.
I don't wanna sound lazy but is there any chance you have some good resources for importing your mesh and textures into the game + viewing them with the character? Looks really cool
Your weapons do look better!
However, it all comes down to efficiency... Your weapons are 4-16 TIMES less efficient while they look only 1.2X better. Now if you could get better quality while using the same texture size, or even better - smaller texture size; now that would be an impressive feat! Post your unwraps, maybe we can help you with packing and get this thing fixed up :P

im pretty sure hes not re-UVing the meshes.
just replacing the.DDS files only but i kind of agree. however, if your PC can handle the extra memory budget these textures use up than I see no problem with higher resolutions...
cept for pixel shimmering.... anyways lol
For comparison sake I'd like to see the old and new versions at the same resolution. But for a pc game, there's no reason not to have 1024 textures on a fps weapon, consoles just have tight memory restrictions.

Some UVs are terrible with 50% wasted space, plus they are in your face all the time so it does make difference at least at my resolution (1920x1200)

Is the dagger sculpt looking better so far?
Nope, it's just a texture edit (which are regular DDS files)
What I'm doing doesn't even require an SDK really
Slightly unfinished normal map w/ placeholder materials
Gotta redo the handle details, but I'm really pleased with the metal normal.
Looks good though

It was my first sculpt and shit so it kinda shows lol

Yeah I plan on retexturing all weapons in the game (link in the first post)
Yeah lol it's pretty.. different to say the least o__o
Still works fine for simple stuff, I guess!
I'd say most weapons are in the 800-2000 tri range, depending on scale/level of detail

Still wip
Finished & released
Will definitely be using you texture pack after a while
but seriously, this looks awesome!!
In other news, I finished this:

Mmm, especially Bethesda games are always best enjoyed on PC for their modding ability :P
