Just a few questions (First post)

Hello everyone :),

I have been looking at the forums everyday for the past few months depressing myself with all your insane artwork and models you have created. I have however plucked up some courage to ask some fairly basic questions about 3D modeling and if I am doing it right.

First I do have a few books (Not sure if I can mention them??) that I have been reading as well as checking out youtube for the never ending tutorials.

Basically my question is surrounding if it its acceptable to use from what I can only describe as "floating geomatry" with in game assets.

Here are some pictures of some super basic things I have done in the past few nights.

So for example, the speakers on the lefthand side are all connected (vert wise). However I have seen in some instances where you don't always have to do that and so you could have them floating over the top without it being connected so it means you save polygons/tris . I would assume that the picture above is correct because of the sunken nature of the speakers it means that the "big square" polygon would go over/cut across the top.

So for example with the speakers below could I have the 4 things (sorry idk what they are) in each corner not attached (vert wise) or would this cause problems at all?

Truely sorry if what I have put is completely useless to you. I have tried to best explain myself as well as using this as an oppertunity to say hello since alot of people on here seem to be super friendly. Also I am scared to post anything in the "what are you working on thread" lol.
