... mad figure drawing skills! But I have a feeling that your proportions could need some work. Some torsos look too long and legs a bit off. Get them right and dayum...
wow those figure drawings are ace! are you actually at a life drawing session when you do these or are they poses from a book or something? Ive never been to actual life drawing class
Thank you Jessica Your figure drawing studies have inspired the crap out of me. I was always avoiding figure (not sure why) and focusing on environments instead. I have been pushing my figure drawing for the last two days since stumbling across this thread and now I already see drastic improvements in my work as well as feel a stronger sense of confidence when tackling figures.
I really like your style in sketching and sculpting. Once I build my art fundamental skills more I will jump into the digital sculpting world too. I am following your thread and eagerly await your next update
Josh - Aww, thanks so much! It's so flattering you've found some inspiration in my work :] Here's some more inspiration for you - Paul Richards does the best figure drawings evarr.
rockstar6 - Thanks!!
In my 3d Character class we get to stylize a character from Legend! Here's my Oonooona. ZBrush next...:
Great concept and name. Looking forward to see it ZBrushed. Thank you for the link to Paul Richards blog. I had not heard of him before and his stuff is also really helpful. See you soon
Seems to be following your design perfectly. I'd say currently you have nothing to worry about in terms of zbrush. How long did it take you out of curiosity?
Hey Jessica, how long (average) do you spend on your gesture studies from the life drawing classes? I noticed some you get the shadows in and some extra details. I am used to 30-60 second poses and I only get the basic form in. Also these look quite big yeah? A2 newsprint? I find it hard to fit many poses in A3/4. Anyway, can't wait to see more do you have any male stuff? I know males are not as pretty but I would love to see your approach to those as well haha
just wnated to post a reply here so I get notifications
ignore the questions if you don't have time for those
awesome stuff, I especially like the anatomy and motion studies you make!
do you draw them based on a model posing for you? pictures, or from heart maybe?
are you going in to animation, or how come you draw so many figures?
I'm guessing you start with a kinda like stick figure, with modified circles and then build up the muscle and fat on that?
I see you block in shadows aswell.. I just saw a portrait painting video and there the dude uses a white pencil for stong highlights, it really looks cool! do you leave the highlights out on purpose? I think it would really make these sketches pop!
have you seen david finch's dynamic figure drawing dvds? its good stuff, but now that I think of it you might know the stuff he says there but maybe you would find stuff there which is useful for you!
Josh - My gestures range from 1 - 5 minutes. But sometimes during model breaks, I will go back to the drawings and touch them up some more :] During the gestures I try to get the main stuff so I can add embellishment later. 30 seconds is hard to get anything more than action lines really, let alone form. The newsprint is 18" x 24". Also I have nothing against males xD but for some reason my school workshop seems to favor the female models haha.
Kenny - Thanks, glad you like my Link xD
Giles - Thank you! ^_^
Cordero - The figure drawings are from a model. Actually, I don't enjoy animation, figure drawing is just one of my hobbies xD haha. I start with main lines and then I draw spheres for the ribcage and head. I don't really draw spheres for the limbs though, I just start drawing in the silhouette of curves and straight where I see them. Cuz I think when I draw spheres for limbs then everything just starts looking really tubey.
Ohh yeah I've seen people use white pencil for highlight! I would like to try that but I don't know how well it would show up on the newsprint. Maybe i'll get one of those brown paper notebooks to test it xD And no, I haven't heard of David Finch, so thanks so much for the recommendation !!
wow! your characters and concepts look amazing!
Anyways, congrats for the graduate on May 20th!
Seems I live in Irvine, I should make my time to go your portfolio show hahaha XD
I've been taking a figure class with Stan Prokopenko! That guy does sweet demos Last session I focused on lighting and learning to slow down so I can avoid breaking things through over-stylization >< haha:

Looks really good. I attend such classes too but your lighting looks striking. If you want, give me some tips Here's my sketchbook.

Painting came out nice! Just the right border-rocks are kinda ruining the whole perspective. They don't follow the rest of the perspective.
Nice greentooth tat on the back of the neck, too
AimBIZ - Thanks!! We will be learning REAL face topology next x_x, so I will be sure to get my practice in then xD haha
pixelb - hehe yess :]
rogueNoodle - Thank you Ah, you spotted him! hehehe
<<jealousy
Don't mind me, but the bottom face reminds me of Fargoth from Morrowind haha
acapulco - Thanks, and yeah, my proportions can get a bit wonky sometimes :poly122: I need to exercise a bit more control hehe xD
Ged - These are at a life drawing session.

And a little painting I'm working on! Critique and comments welcome
Krista - Most of those are gestures of 2 - 5 minutes, only one of them is a 2 hour pose (third in middle row).
