Alien/Humanoid Sculpts

Hey all! First time posting here. Been lurking around here for sometime now, admiring the beutiful art people post here. I have been doing 3D art actively for more than a year now, but sculpting is quite new to me. I mainly work for mods right now, but I hope to gain much more experience to hopefully in the future work as paid 3D artist.

These models are fairly new, as one of them was my second and the other was my third sculpt. I did them during the summer. Both done in sculptris. I made a low poly model for the second alien, and did a high poly bake out of it. Ill put up pictures later on of it if you are interested. I can also post pictures of my other work here, if it's allowed? Since creating a thread for each of my models would be quite useless I guess. Anyways, pics:

Hey man! Welcome to polycount. I think the area that could use the most improvement ARTISTICALLY would just be your proportions and muscular anatomy, though they ARE humanoid aliens, so perhaps not. Check out this post, and I find this image to be very useful (I don't know who made it, so props and credit to whoever did)

I think you should experiment with the polish brush in Zbrush as well. I personally like 'Polish D' for some reason. You can really chisel in details with the polish brushes, and your guys are looking pretty soft and round all over. It looks like you've got the hand of polypainting though!

How are you making your base meshes? Zsphere, or are you making them in maya or something and importing them?

Every creature/character artists I can think of uses actual anatomy to make their outlandish designs feel believable. This is going to sound harsher than I mean it but judging by the quality of several things like the design, anatomy and color palette I believe you could stand to return back the basics. Do your art fundamentals, do some 2d studies, don't even worry about crazy alien characters right now. Focus on getting the basics nice and solid. I promise you'll be better for it.

@Dietcoke: Thanks for the crits and tips :) Exactly what I needed. Thanks for the links and images too. Ill study and train more on the anatomy. That is what I actually want to learn more. I usually start from a sphere.

@Dan!: Thanks for the tips and crits :) Yes, It probably be better to use actual anatomy and I will in the feature. I didn't think of it when I did those, sadly. But hey, now I atleast know. These were just to practice my sculpting skills rather than any too serious. But I mean to create something serious, but only thing is that I'm not too good when it comes to drawing. So creating a good conecpt art and then sculpting a mesh looking from it isn't too easy for me. I never have been too good at drawing, but I really would like to improve myself.
