Gears 3 char models I did. Art Direction by Chris Perna. Concepts by James Hawkins. Parts and pieces are from the great team here at Epic. Too much to point out in entirety. I.E bottom half of Commando Dom is mostly Lanning (salvaged). Bottom of Digger Boomer is original boomer. Butcher Boomer was originally done by Mark Morgan etc....
Constructed over Kantus. Fingernails and teeth are Kantus.
Ice T!! I gave em the pimp nail. Also gave him a broken clock around his neck stuck at "6am". Yeah i'm a fan .
Pants/Boots mostly by Lanning. Head based off original Dom. Sculpted it to be young Dom (I looked at Chino Moreno a lot. lol) edit: Gloves by Lanning too. And hair was originally from tons of other peoples work on Doms hair then I reworked to look like Commando dom based off him being young/bandana look and sort of Chino Moreno because, yeah. I thought it would be coo.
Based on Butcher Boomer (Mark Morgan)
Head started from Mark Morgan sculpt of Prescott
Based on Lannings Boomer. Bottom half is boomer (Lanning) verbatim.
man these are freaking amazing...absolutely beautiful characters..so much details. How long does it take for you guys to finish one character?..if you don't mind me asking.
Holy fuck. Hah. That's amazing. So much great work these past couple of days.
For the first character: the trim around the plates on his arm and the rope binding on his pants did you have some way to do that sort of quickly? Do you have a brush in Zbrush? Insert mesh brush or an alpha with some sort of repeat? How did you do that? Thanks!
I'm really liking the proportions here, VS. the other EPIC characters. Don't get me wrong, I still really like the big blocky, guys, but the proportions on these guys is much more my speed. The Clothing is also amazingly well done. The folds, and creases, are all very believable. And of course the hard surface stuff is great too.
All around great work, man. Curious though, do you do the textures for the low polys too? I'd love to see some of your texture work, especially a flat or two.
WOW..... This is some of the best art I have seen for quite a while. I really love the attention to detail in all of these characters. Consider my mind blown :poly115:
between your thread and kevin's, and then all the rage artwork up now too, we've got an embarrassment of riches.
i've had the pleasure of seeing most of these characters in-game, and it's a real testament to the quality here that so much of this detail survives the bake, and then (more tellingly) the chaos of gameplay. the spiny armor boss in particular, all of that "reads" very well in the game, so nice work.
This was my first big Gear character at Epic. This image was what I used to show the high poly vs the low poly. I did this for awhile to make sure I wasn't losing too much and to also see exactly what is lost in the low poly. High vs Low is labeled.
This is the new Hoffman for Gears of War 3. The Head is from Kevin Lannings Hoffman. I started out with the Hoffman from Gears of War 2 (done by Lanning) and then sculpted on him and did stuff from there. I only kept the head since we started a new base at the time. I can't remember where the arms started. It may be from Kevins (at that time) Marcus arms at like division 1 or 2. I thinned them up so they wouldn't be marcus-status thick. Divided it. And then did an old-buff-man pass on them. That is always fun reference. I like that type of work. . Then built the gloves over the current hand we had (all Marcus established). This was before we started to really neutralize the mouth and move the arms out more.
Hoffman is a cool character. Dunno how happy I was with my execution of him though . This char had a lot of direction and help from Perna, Hawkins and Lanning (as well as the rest of the character guys too). Gotta thank Lanning for putting up with me on this one. Lol. His back was re-done quite a few times. The hat was a LOT of fun.
The emblem on his breast plate was modeled out. (ooyee)

seriously. coming from an enviro guy who's not that easily impressed with characters. This is ridiculously good. Great job, man.
