They're making a completely original movie, with a completely original set of characters, in a completely original location and is VERY loosely inspired by a similar premise.
I really can't imagine a 20+ year old foreign brand has enough mainstream mindshare to necessitate the name.

Akira is not just 'some brand' though. both manga and movie are pretty fameous.
Why even bother naming it Akira?
cos it'll gain much more attention this way? i bet the movie would be much more likely to slip under the radar if it was made under a different name.
also, people would probably call it an Akira ripoff.
unfortunately game industry also picked up this notion.
XCOM, Fallout 3 and lots of other games could avoid the fanbase rage by using an original setting and name. But it'd probably be less profitable.
i still have yet to watch and absorb inspiration from Akira its just so far down my list to watch, Ashamed Hollywood got to it before me!
Ghost in the shell i still think would be the only Anime worth being live action its impossible to go wrong with production unless its on purpose or the man in charge is a fail trying a fatal attempt at reclaiming a new fanbase u_u

Look at all the free publicity they're already getting and they haven't eve started filming yet. Hollywood has a pretty decent reputation for not caring if that publicity is good or bad.
The director seems to have a decent enough history that would suit this movie well to be very dark and sinister to a degree you might not expect.
I wonder how many people tought that before they saw the Phantom Menace, and again before Attack of the Clones, and desperatley before Revenge of the Sith?
That's not too bad a choice actually, but if they're casting a token Asian actor, I dare say they'd have been better to replace Lady Miyako. Having a British actress as the crazy Shinto-ish cult leader is going to be a little more jarring than having a Yank as Colonel Shikishima.
replacing 1 actor doesn't mean anything to me...it just comes off as them trying to say "hey see there's an asian guy in the film, we have nothing against asians...." which to me still means they are missing the point all together.
I recently got around to watching Akira because of this thread, I loved it! However now I feel everybody's pain, there is no way Hollywood can pull this off it's too subtle, too dark too weird for them to get right. The only part Hollywood would get right are the explosions (maybe)
i am sure this movie will be a giant steaming pile, but think of the positives, i am sure to hype up the film they will release an uber special edition of the original with 9 bonus behind the scenes blu rays, a leather bound version of the manga, and an akira bike, i cant wait.
I'm not sure if that synopsis is real. The bikes are however a very important part of the anime/manga. Especially Kaneda's bike, it would be weird to entirely skip it.
I'm all for keeping stuff from the original but why did they feel the necessity of changing the characters' ethnic background but not the names? I mean sure, it's the future and all but why would they have japanese names like Tetsuo? I guess a name like Ky could be perceived as some futuristic name or whatever. But if anything it's gonna look like they've ripped of the original rather than done a remake(or whatever the hell it is they're doing). This version is just getting weirder the more I read about it.
@Jam I-am: I agree completely. The news even tells about George Takei and some people more or less pushing them into doing it.
One of my quirky favourites though is Jojo amazing adventure..
This man knows what's good
Speaking of manga, I have recently become a huge fan of Inio Asano. If you haven't read Oyasumi Punpun or Nijiara Hologram you should find it now. It's weird stuff. Weird but pretty damn good. I'm still trying to find the time to go through Solanin.
Now see if they did a Perfect Blue to Black Swan typed translation with Akira, that might just make for a decent movie.
Yeah, an adaptation of Perfect Blue would work pretty well, even if it was westernized. Its themes weren't as deeply rooted in Japanese culture/history as Akira's.
I dont think so, the size and quality of the manga and animation quality of the anime (for that time) is incredible.
I fully agree with this. Akira is a milestone when it comes to animation. Don't get me wrong, Venus wars' quality is pretty high too, just not as high as Akira's. Also, it's experimenting with using film footage is just a bad decision. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlDXakU68fc#t=0m40s
I'm not sure what to make of this recent Akira news. They're gonna use a lower budget. This would either push them into making a better movie creatively-wise or it's just gonna turn into a crap movie with lower budget.
The future isn't bright on these anime adaptations. Anyone remember that Cameron still has the rights for Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm)? I still have hope for that one but after I read some rumors about blood would be blue, or something, to suite younger audiences...
I doubt it will ever get as bad as Dragonball or The Last Airbender though.
On topic I might see this Akira movie for the lulz though.
So i just finished watching Akira and i didn't understand ANYTHING towards the end.
It had many good points but i cant accept an ending or when need to know stuff is unexplained
I REALLY wonder what there planing to do to get a Live action out of this

.
Go and read the comic, it makes much more sense. The anime was done while the manga(comic) was still in progress so I guess they just made up some rushed ending.

I can make Kaneda's bike Now.
If you did understand anything of the ending then I would fear for your sanity.
When ever the Anime makes little sense the manga fills you in
Im about half way through te manga i just watched the Animated version to get some views of that Beautiful Bike
If only most people would have read berserk after watching then life would have been different..

Syndicate.
I have a feeling this will become an increasing trend.

lolol awesome
BRB vomiting everywhere.
Wow. A bar owner. So no motorcycle gang at all, if that's real.
I don't even know what to say that hasn't been said already...

haha wtf is this
Hmm, on hold to rework a lower budget..

Tsutomu Nihei is one of my favourite manga artists too. Blame! and Biomega are awesome. Amazing environments and talking bears with guns on motorcycles.

I'm happy to see someone mention Oyasumi Punpun. I usually stay away from manga and anime, but this is a true gem.

Ha, I'm surprised that someone else is reading it! I love how it gets progressively more surreal with every volume. Asano's art is great as well.
On a side note, I'm wondering what happened to that Hollywood remake of Evangelion. I've always wanted to see how they would handle this:
oh, and Tsutomu Nihei is indeed awesome.
i heard some cg film of blame! was in the making but it's been a long time since i saw any news about it.
