I fully agree. The movie starts off well but since the manga wasn't finished at the time the movie just gets weird when it tries to finish what's already been developed in the manga. I really hope the american team follows the manga and not the movie. The movie is good but the manga is amazing. Hell, Akira isn't even present in the movie.
I'm curious to why people are so upset over this news though? The original will remain the way it is, so will the manga. Are you worried that the title will be associated with this Hollywood movie instead?
because when it is made, a part of me will keep whispering "watch it.. see what they did to it.." and I know I'll give in and I know that theres only disappointment and a long winded rant that very few people will get waiting for me
I can't be the only one who is looking forward to seeing a psychotic punk kid tear New New York in half then get shot in the face with a fucking laser cannon
You guys are old and lame.
Mar.. theres no way they can match the destruction in the anime in the film.. the budget isnt big enough.. I would actually be comforted if the budget was bigger.. and not to mention the length of the film.. hollywood seems to like 95-105 minutes..the anime alone (nevermind taking stuff from the manga) is 20 odd minutes longer.. theres only one way to make that all happen.. butcher the fuck out of it..and it was leo di carpio that originally secured the rights and brought it to LA.. its his pet project.. god have mercy...
The problem is, when you start thinking "Oh I liked this scene in the anime, it was awesome!" it becomes much like going:
"the first terminator movies were good because it had a robot smashing things"
arnold smashing things is cool, but it isn't what makes the movies good :P, and it is sadly the things the eventual sequels focused on.
Sadly these are the things remakes will focus on when being made, to take those flashy things that were cool, and seeing them as the defining feature of the original.
Now I'm just wating till they announce a remake of Neon Genesis Evangelion; make it completely action-oriented, filled with CGI and the worst of all, decide to give Shinji a goddamn spine.
There was also an attempt to do a Live Action Neon Genesis a few years back. Weta got as far as doing some pre-production work on one of the Eva units.
Just for a moment, let's look at this inevitable travesty from a starry eyed positive position - in a best case scenario, do you think it'd be possible to translate Akira to a 120 minute movie, have it adequately cover the story and wind up with something that's coherent, as opposed to the original animated movies brilliantly mad trip? Whereas something like the abovementioned Cowboy Bebop would lend itself well to a live action translation given its episodic nature, familiar tropes and relative simplicity, I'm skeptical that Akira would really work.
Just to be clear, I don't particularly want to see the Yanks messing about with Cowboy Bebop either.
Another guys opinon. Shitty directors, theres no way its going to be any good.
There's no way they could do any of it justice in a movie, it wont physically work(blobby man, giant fridge?).
I think they should do their own take on it. Make an American version, but call it something different, and have their own take on what they think the mythos of Akira is, that could possibly work. Like a young teen, whom is rebelling at capitalism or something like that, called Billy-Bob.
How do they even call it Akira in America, and have it set in America and have it totally American with the name Akira. Just contriving that is going to make the movie shit.

I think your suggestion about using another title and all sounds much better than what they seem to be doing. However Akira was never a central character in the anime version. He was an important person which people talked about and we saw him briefly in some scene but he's not as central as Tetsuo or Kaneda. Akira could be presented as a japanese boy with super powers, there is no need for him to be american or white since he's not a character that the audience needs to relate to.
With all that being said the new Karate Kid movie was still called Karate Kid even though there was no karate in the movie and I don't expect Hollywood film makers to be smart.
I WILL DO IT. I WILL WATCH THE FILM.
I love the Movie, and i'm about half-way through the Manga.
I'm incredibly curious about how they're going to mess with it.
I don't know why Hollywood continues to ruin things from my childhood...
I expect cowboy bebop will be on the list soon as well.
Oh, feck it. I give up... There'll only be one Akira (manga) and one Watchmen (comic) and one 300 (comic) and one Sin City (comic) and one Swamp Thing (comic) and one V for Vendetta (comic) for me. I'll be in the pub with Alan Moore.
While I agree that they will likely all be awful, I will still see all of these simply because I just enjoy watching movies. I always look at it as someone else telling the same story, where something is lost/things are added. Usually the person who originally told the story tells it best, but that's not to say that you can't enjoy other people telling the same story.
That is to say, I don't think it takes anything away from the originals, at all. If they were to forcibly break down my door, remove all of my Akira-related media, and replace it with copies of this movie on DVD, then I would be upset. But such a thing will never happen.
Pff at this point im sure the bike wont even be the one were used too :C
It'll be a Harley obviously. Why the fuck would an american biker gang be on rice rockets? Honestly, there's no such thing. I expect kaneda to have a handlebar mustache as well.
I just watched Dragon Ball Evolution the other night. I can only hope this movie achieves the same heights in terms of cheese and deviating from the source in the most insane ways possible. If it is that bad, it might end Kristen Stewart's career. Win-Win
Shit. Thats just sacrilege. Why can't they write something new. But as it is with all good stories since man learned to tell stories. They will be told over and over and over again. But there should be a rule that big budget films arent allowed to do remakes for a minimum of 50 years. I predict Lord of the Rings will be done again in 10-20 years time. Oh, and an american version of Harry Potter will be done eventually.
Just don't touch The Goonies. And if you do, do a friggin sequel. Not a remake.
But as it is with all good stories since man learned to tell stories. They will be told over and over and over again.
lol, i don't think this is the case with hollywood. judging by movies i've seen come out in recent years i'm pretty sure that at least half of stuff they remake is really mediocre story-wise.
and that's a good thing, otherwise they would have defiled much more good movies/books/animations by now.
I expect kaneda to have a handlebar mustache as well.
I would pay cash money to see Kaneda sport a handlebar mustache!
I took the liberty of creating it! Yes. I know. That handlebar mustache is ungodly... I blame Japan. Actually in retrospect I think Akira vs Kaneda's handlebar mustache would be pretty epic.
Dunno how to do better than the anime...
Detail and quality of the animation was hudge...
Really hope they won't gonna hide everything with very dark and too much bloody scenes saying that is for the ambiance of Akira.
Raaa fuck that. And american actor... This doesn't have any sense, I really cannot understand the pleasure they have to create a movie on Akira.

It still amazes me just how great the animation is in Akira. IT'S OVER TWENTY YEARS OLD and better than just about anything else that has ever come out.

Miyazaki ;P
Just sayin....oh shi... They be remaking his stuff soon! *facepalm. I dare them to touch Laputa! I'll blow them up!
well, if animation quality is the main criteria then akira indeed pwns everything else i watched.
After seeing that it just hurts to watch newer anime that use a shitload of 3D models with bold cel shaders and framerate that doesn't match the 2d stuff. and the crappy slow-mo and camera fx, colorful glows etc...
This is the ultimate anti-piracy method in the world. Make it so shit no-one will want to watch it, never mind risk 10years to record it haha xD God what have they done, i mean really/?
If it is that bad, it might end Kristen Stewart's career. Win-Win
Oh fucking hell. I did not make the connection that she's in this movie until today when a friend told me. I thought you were making some sort of joke when I had read that before. If she kills this movie, so help me...
I dunno guys you just never know what to expect. The director seems to have a decent enough history that would suit this movie well to be very dark and sinister to a degree you might not expect. Decaprio is a producer and his win streak with movies is incredible right now.
Say what you want about the actors/ actresses, i remember going in to the Matrix expecting a bill and teds excellent adventures meets Hackers. Good or bad i think this will most definitely be an opening night movie, win - win indeed.

I agree. I mean the guy playing Kaneda wasn't bad in Tron. The Kirsten whatever girl only has bad rep from the twilight movies, she was pretty good in both Adventureland and Into the wild. Dicaprio is a producer which is a good sign. You never know, this might turn out well.
And yes, the Shia Lebouf thing was a joke since it hasn't been confirmed or even hinted anywhere else.

Wait, how!?
Going from bad to worse.
beat you to it a page before this! but yea sucks.
It'll be a Harley obviously. Why the fuck would an american biker gang be on rice rockets? Honestly, there's no such thing. I expect kaneda to have a handlebar mustache as well.
Don't laugh. It's already relocated to Manhattan.

You're trying to build enthusiasm for this movie. Stop it. It will all end in tears.
That was a joke, right?
