how to make an alpha map

I am kinda new here and was referred to a friend to post on here if i have a question..I am making an environment on my spare time and kind of stuck on making an alpha channel in Photoshop and using it in max. For example i have a ground plane and want to add foliage around the scene such as leaves and weeds in that sense. any help would be appreciated thank you

    Um... Not sure really how to answer this. Alpha maps work from either black to white or white to black depending on the engine (one being opaque, the other being transparent). You can either paint it by hand in photoshop, or create masks based on images or whatever. If you're baking from one object to another, alpha maps can be made from missed rays from the raytracing.
