So I did this small prop (lol crate) it's a small amplifier. And made it with the purpose of releasing it here so that people can pratice their materials with it. The max file is max2009 and is using 3pshader Pro. But you can easily use the lite version.
Inside the zip there is the normal map, difuse tga and the psd which I set up like if this was for me.

[edit] The high poly seems broke. Did you apply e-mesh with a turbosmooth modifier on? Importing into max and throwing a tsmooth on it causes errors.
yeah. it's working fine. The errors that appear is because i deleted the .mtl so he is saying that file is missing. But the mesh is good. Just tried it.
I haven't. I just finished assembling the file to upload here and I might start texture soon. For pratice.

Yes sir. That's exactly the point
Quick fix for me was to import it. then export it back and re import. dont know why that worked but it did.
2009 uses the old obj exporter so maybe thats the issue.
try adding an edit normals modifier and reset it

Per : as far as the actions go, I think Nick is referring to the Deus EX scene I posted earlier on, which was indeed using your actions (being done while I was working at 3 point ) except for curvatures which were baked with some extra max plugin and a simple action I made to separate concavity and convexity (kinda like you rgb extract action). And that kind of stuff is indeed incredibly handy ^^
