Hey, I am currently just about to start my final year at university after the summer break. I decided to start part of my project early as it should (hopefully) improve my skills for any other character art I do after this.
What I am doing, for this part is... A high poly anatomy study. I want to sculpt the bones, the muscles and then the surrounding skin. I hope to gain an in depth knowledge on the subject so I can recreate my own characters even when there is no specific reference available.
Anyway, I have only just started, progress is slow because of the summer holidays, but I will be updating this thread regularly for critiques.
I have started the skull and the first 7 vertebrae, but everything will still be WIP until near the end when I will start polishing pieces for presentation.
Any critiques or even useful links that would help are greatly appreciated,
Thanks

AND I have done more back . I am not sure about the proportions/curve of the spine; but I will change all that when I have done the rest of the links...
Have a feeling this is gonna take aaaages haha
Crits appreciated
lol its not finished... I am thinkin of polypainting it after I done the bones, and then I am guna do a layer of muscles and then skin...
Oh, the rib cage is very place holder
crits appreciated
Angle of the brow makes him look angry, make it more like the real thing...less frowny
I refined the bones, taking into consideration crits from various places/people:
but it varies obviously so 7 isnt necessarily wrong.
That's not actually the case. The tibia/shinbone is just as long as the femur--actually usually slightly longer (but yeah the gap between ribcage and pelvis does look a bit much ) That's probably the most common mistake people do when they do human characters. I make that mistake all the time after a session of sculpting and have to go back and correct it.
Edit: Actually, I meant the lower leg is often slightly longer than the upper leg, not necessarily the tibia by itself. I'll leave the above unedited as a reminder to myself to think before typing.
We spend most of our time interacting with people at an eye-to-eye level, which skews the perspective of the legs when we observe them, and I'm sure that's why when we do characters we tend to get the proportions more wrong the further down we get.
It looks like the proportions are mostly correct, aside from the legs, and ribcage/pelvis distance, as mentioned:
Edit: Updated with the ribcage/pelvis distance that Jessica mentioned.
To everyone that said the legs are short - Another person said the pubic syphosis should be half way down the body or slightly below, and not above. So should I should make the pelvis longer as well?
To Raider - I plan to go as accurate as need be for the surface anatomy, So tips like yours are perfect. I don't think I would have ever found out about the whole xiphisternum thing on my own.. Its exactly the kind of stuff I am trying to learn from this study.
I'm going to add the pubic syphosis (I should probably have made it part of the same geometry), and I was planning to poly paint the costal cartilage.
Anyway, I'm on everyone's crits, and you should see in the next update
Oh yeah, and for future crits, I guess it will help if you knew this information:
-Middle aged (30-40 I guess)
-Male
-Average build (mesomorph)
-Average height (7 heads) unless 7 1/2 is more average?
-White man
Hope this helps
Iv done some more work on the skull, with everyones advice and some orthographic renders of a scan which was great help.

Small update. I have been a bit busy... Iv changed him to 7 and a half heads now aswell.
A few more things to refine, but I'm going to start the muscles now
Also, I don't really get where the risorius muscle originates from? I'm having a hard time finding a good, solid place for reference lol, so if anyone can help me out, that would be awesome.
Anyway, progress:
Done the majority of the arm muscles. Still got a few to do on the fore arm. Heres my progress:
Still a few muscles missing around the place, but its getting there. Also, btw, I am just blocking muscles in before sculpting a more believable form to each of them. I think it will be easier to sculpt them all together...
Should release the finished model for learning :P
