1. Decide exactly how curvy it really needs to be. Right now, that's a lot of vertices for a simple surface.Kill all vertices that don't contribute to the curvature.
2. Try to avoid interior vertices. Just go from outer edge to outer edge.
That should kill a lot of polys and give you a cleaner shape.
As suggested above, start by completely reducing the number of edges you have to start with. You have plenty that aren't defining the shape, or aren't that much.
If you are using ye' olde' method of blocking it out with a plane and extruding from there, it's going to save you an immense amount of headaches starting with a VERY simple mesh that is blocked out, before you go to making every last piece of the silhouette absolutely perfect. The first paintover suggestion is the best idea if you want to go this route.

I've now cleaned it up a bit better, but i'll take on your base leech and yeah, it'l be modelled into more.
that or make a sphere for the chest area and extrude out the legs/head from that
