Spent the good part of Saturday afternoon playing Mega Man 2.
My girlfriend and I spent somewhere close to 3 hours last night playing Adventures of Lolo on NES. That game has really held up well, the graphics are simple but effective, and the puzzles are fantastic. The one song that loops throughout can get old, but oh well. That's a series that would do well to come back as a portable game.
i bought jagged allience 2 for nearly 10 times already, bet next time i wanna play it and can#t find a disc i#d buy it again - oh dang i got it on steam, so i guess i'll just end this vicious circle
I first played it when I was 11 and never realy managed to get trough. I oftentimes replayed it later on, sick game.
Actualy all old games from acclaim were good (Turok)... oh acclaim

Love Lolo. The programmers were geniuses and the ideas were brilliant.
Also does anyone remember this game ?
I got the Wildfire version from some Magazine CD.
The freedom you got and the heap of weapons is quite fun.
I did not bother about the story much but neverless spent several hours playing it.
Frogger
Final Fight
Megaman
Bomberman
Sim City (Original)
UN Squadron (Area 88 )
..just a few I'd love to hook up and play again.
Anyone remember a SNES RPG where you played a guy in an orange outfit (2 player was in blue). Your weapon upgraded to a yo-yo / shurikens / flying coins, and sometimes enemies would leave gold coins behind. You had to rescue/win Neko the cat?
To throw the context of the awesome games being more awesome than you think, you need reminders of how crappy some crappy old games were, like EA's entry into the then-booming genre of automotive combat back in '97 when Twisted Metal 2 and I'76 were hotcakes:
You have to admit the music for that game was still pretty fucking awesome. I give em credit for that. Don't know why shitty games always had good music.
I first played it when I was 11 and never realy managed to get trough. I oftentimes replayed it later on, sick game.

FUCK.YEAH! I loved shadowman! Never played the sequel, but the first one on N64 was absolutely awesome. It was a large game, varied in environments, good story, Jack the fucking Ripper and a dude with a skull embedded in his chest with badass guns, what more do you want?
Jeremy-S: Getting arcade supplies is hella easy, hooking them up as well. All you really need is a basics in eletronics and some carpentry skills. And you could probably get the latter done by a professional.
A mate and me are going to be building an arcade machine soon. And I should finish up on my PS3 arcade stick.
@Maph, all those cables intimidates me. Is it as hard as putting together a PC? Cause that's pretty damn easy. But I can't solder to save my life, and from what I've seen (admittedly very little), you have to solder a lot.
I'm gonna type Arcade Cabinet Supplies into google and see what I get, but do you have any links that you use and trust? I REALLY wanna make a MAME cabinet, and if I can, find some old games in cabinet form to buy. Like a NEO-GEO MVS. That would be decent. And two of my all time favorite arcade games, Strider, and Shinobi
Agreed, Outlaws was a great game! It even had both a story mode, and extra bounty hunter mode, and secret areas. I've still got the game in it's original box, manual and disks and all.

Depending on the controllerboard you're using, you don't need to solder a thing. And even if you do, soldering really isn't all that hard. At least not for this sort of stuff. http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html
This thing features screw-in terminals for yer wires, and if you crimp some crimp connectors on the other end of your wires, you only need to click them on your button's poles eh voila.
Depending the type of iPac, you can hook up two or four players to one board. Pretty neat. It basically emulates a keyboard but with some magic for faster response times and continous pressing handling, etc...
Seriously, the hardest part is a. learning the basics of electronics, and b. the physical work of making a cabinet. But again, you can have the latter done by a pro if you want.
Are you US based? Because I get all my shiz from mainland EU. http://www.arcadeshop.de http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/
But I'm sure the US has a bunch of resellers as well.
The controller I'm using is a custom made thing from ArcadeForge, a German collective. http://www.arcadeforge.de/?page_id=127
As opposed to the IPac which is a MAME only board, this can also be used on the PS3, PC as a joystick, PC as Mame controller (ie. simulating keyboard) and XBox360 via passthrough.
But be careful if you end up buying something like this. The one I got had an empty EEPROM (read: no drivers, nothing, it was a blank board)! So a co-worker and I reprogrammed the damned thing at work. At least it works now.
If you do end up making it all by yourself, you'll need supplies. But read over this first, everyone planning on making a mame cabinet or controllers should read this. http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/introduction.html
Thanks for that Maph, I had tried to get one started a while ago, but lack of money, the idea of soldering killed it for me. But if there's ways to avoid a lot of soldering, I'm sure I could grab a youtube video on beginner soldering and get it down rather shortly, and now that I got some work, I wanna give this a try. It HAS TO look good tho. Nothing ghetto, with wires hanging out, and pc out of the back of it... But this could be a good project to do away from 3D for a while.
I'm US based, but with some of the terminology you've given, I can google for what I need the most.
And I still want some original classic arcade cabs. I was able to find a couple Shinobi's, and a LOT of Neo-Geo MVS cabs, for decent prices, but the shipping is a killer. Being an arcade kid is kinda spendy
No worries. Soldering is actually pretty fun when you get into it. Nothing like the smell of molten lead!
I found a site once with pretty detailed breakdowns on how some guy built his cabinets, was pretty cool. I'll see if I can find that one again.
I know we looked into original MK3 and KI cabinets, but those cost a fuckload of money. Plus, if a ROM breaks down, you're pretty much fucked unless you know how to program them.
In any case, old games rock!
Gradius, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 3, Double Dragon, Castlevania, Soul Reaver (oh how I love that game!), Shadow Man, Gauntlet (I played that one to death), etc...
I have about 2.5K+ roms that I trawl through every now and again looking for old gems but heres some of the emulated games I regularly revisit when the mood takes me:
1941, Another World, Alterred Beast, Black Tiger, Dragon Ninja, Earthworm Jim 1&2, Forgotten worlds, Street fighter 2, Final Fight, IK+, N.A.R.C., Rainbow Islands, Toki, Magic pockets, GODS, Turrican 1&2, Strider, Shadow Warriors, Speedball 2, R-type (hardest game ever created... oh, except for Commandos), Zelda, Mario64, Shadows of the Empire
Currently stuck on Wonder boy III Dragons trap atm. Need to follow a walkthrough I think.
hoi was one of the hardest games ever. it was 5 levels, each one was really long. only problem was that one hit of anything and you died. jumping over spikes, random enemies. the tiniest screw up would kill you. nad you only got 9 lives such a good Fing game. half the time you didnt know where you were suppose to jump.
@ shotgun: Yeah. Played that a bit back in the day but I preferred Black Tiger. Weapons were better, graphics are nicer and animations is a bit more fluid. Same sort of thing though. Released in the same year I think, 1987.
I think more people will have heard of Rastan though.

Albion! My favourite 2D Role Playing Game. I was playing this as a kid...so awesome!
2,3,4 worlds are locked in this version unless you ring someone up :? but it was still fun. Might need to buy it on steam at some point.

its a combo of f-11/12 and f-9/10 i believe, each sets a parameter and the game will run fine when u find the optimum

I'm a big fan of old arcade games, but I can't find any around here. I kinda wanna make a MAME cabinet, but don't know where to begin...
Looking to put ut2k4 back on my pc. Along with Diablo 2, as well.
[EDIT] Forgot two games I wanna play, but can't find to buy original copies of. Silent Hill 1, and Twisted Metal 2.
Fury 3
SlipStream 5000
Hi-Octane
More soon but awesome thread.
Had a joystick I forget which but was similar to this one except 3 buttons on top plus the trigger, only way to play these craft games.
Love that game and still play it, and if you still play it, you should get the 1.13 update, makes the game 100x better.
Nothing makes JA2 better, but Steroid!
Thanks, will try that update out
Final Fight
Megaman
Bomberman
Sim City (Original)

If anyone knows where I can download it legally, virus free and working on current systems. I'd be chuffed!

S.W.A.T. 1+2
Stinger wins the thread! That game was amazing! And, hands down, the best soundtrack ever for a game.
No legal download is available as it's heavily reliant on CD audio tracks making a difficult release. Buy the physical game!
NOTE: It's installer doesn't work on Windows 7 x64 so oldschool directory copying will have to do.
It's a Win32 game you fool
