Hey all, I've been working in my fretime (HA! Freetime, I only get about 1 hour an evening! lol) on this environment, and it goes without saying that its primary purpose is to expand upon my portfolio, but its definite secondary aim is as a study of Thiago Klafke's Modular environment tutorial:
(AWESOME tutorial, recommend it for all and anyone that hasn't yet read it!) -

SO apologies in advance if the two levels bear likeness to each other!
This is what I've got so far, as I mentioned, freetime is pretty scarce so progress will be slow, but thankfully having a job really has given me a good work ethic. You know what they say - "If you want something done, give it to someone busy" - In hindsight I had LOADS of freetime at uni, but at the time it felt like I was always busy lol!
So, not much to show but here is a work in progress shot:

And as far as modular levels go, i'm assuming you want it to be playable, in which case that door looks too high off the ground, (if it is indeed a door at all) just a suggestion . I'm excited to see this come together though, i'm attempting to do something similar myself.
@sketch81 - Thanks man, I've not really decided yet, which is poor preparation! Thanks for bringing my attention to this, I'll make a decision when I get home, but as it is a modular environment I think I'm going to shoot for xBox 360. Keep the tris down but not tiny, and not use any textres larger than 1024. I actually had an interesting chat with an artist from Sony Entertainment Europe (SEE) - She was telling me that they'd rather use two 1024's than one 2048 as you are more likely to find space for a 1024 texture sheet in the ram. It can sometimes be a few process loops before a large enough chunk of RAM for a 2048 can become available. I'd never thought of this before.
@SouthpawSid - Thanks mate, I completely agree about the shapes, it does seem quite boring. I'm going to sketch up some wall designs here on my lunch break and try to build a few tonight.
I must admit though, I'm having trouble thinking of interesting shapes... hmm, perhaps I'm too focussed on the modularity.
I'll update tonight!
The hole in the wall will have a walkway passing through it, though I'm thinking about lowering it to ground level and having it much simper to walk in.
I'm still not sure what to make with all these pieces, kinda waiting for the inspiration to hit me... I'm thinking about perhaps a futuristic space barracks.
Hmmm... Or maybe a civilian ship... I'm just gonna see where it takes me!
Ok so I'm logging off for tonight and it seems I'm going to be away from ym computer the whole weekend!
I'll stick close to a sketchpad while I'm away at my gf's and will hopefully get some kind of design plans drawn down. It would be nice to know what I'm modelling rather than making it up as I go along lol!
Some peeps may recognise the logos, man I missed that game! I'm deciding that this scene will have something to do with Planetside in one way or another. I was thinking about a possible control room or barracks or something.
No spec maps on the more detailed pieces, but full spec and normals on the walls and floor. Also, normals are on the detailed pieces too.
Keep going, and enjoy your weekend!
During the weekend I went crazy with the drawing, filled about 5 pages of an A3 sketch pad, but I don't have a scanner so can't upload them.
I gradually decided I wanted to make it a plush 1st class lounge interior of a small starport. So I've completely ripped out the old modular bits and bobs and made these new ones.
New texturing approach too. I'm really glad I drew it all out as now I am 99% sure of how I want it to turn out, and I am literally modelling from my own concepts. Which is fun.
The following image is also posted in the WAYWO thread, sorry for the shameless double posting!
points to note: Floor is temporary, I'm going to make it more interesting without making it too noisy (that's the plan anyhow) and the edges of the wall have some seriously sharp specular, this is just me forgetting to turn a layer down in PS and will be fixed.
P.s Enjoying the walls, keep it up.
@roosterMAP - Thanks for the crit, I think you're right, I'll experiment with some paint tonight. I'm not sure how I will figure out a color scheme without seeing more of the environment though so it might be subject to change!
@Sketch81 - No problem and thanks! Stay tuned for morr
I'm on my lunch break atm, cruising the forums, some beautiful art around here, dang I can't wait to get back and get back on to this project!
Sorry for the lack of an update last night guys, I got in very late and although i did do some work on the level, I didn't have the energy to post it! lol
More tonight!
