I love it but im kinda stuck i love doing mobile stuff and next gen stuff and painted stuff but i need to sit down and perfect one because im ok at them all but not great at any.
Started working for a studio (3 months ago) while I was in college on a Wii game, now I've finished college I work there full time but still wouldn't go as far as calling myself a pro just yet
@Nekomata - Keep working hard dude, it's definitely all worth it in the end.
self taught student who thought he could better himself by going to school but really learned nothing from instructors, just by constantly practicing and learning tips and tricks from people on the internet and some classmates.
Technically, I am a student, just not in game dev. However, advertising seems to have a whole lot in common with game design. Other than that, self taught with chances of going pro (lack of artists in the entire country).
Mostly a self-taught student. Only education I have is from the 3 months I went to Futurepoly which I'm much happier having done than going to a 4 year school and spending $100,000.
There is nothing better than work that doesn't feel like work because of the passion you have for it. I am glad I fit into this category.
Hehe, its sort of silly that some guys see "professional" as hating your job. Paid professional is what you are. Whether you love or hate your job or wear green socks and love pizza, if you're currently employed and being paid cash money to make videogames, check the paid professional box. =P

hahaha
8hrs a day I'm paid to animate characters. The rest of the time I'm a hobbyist working on other stuff I find creatively rewarding. I love my job but its hard to tell which one clocks more of my time/attention... maybe work... MAYBE =P
Such a perfect quote. Nothing better then doing what you love every day and being excited to go to work where it dosnt feel like a job, if feels like you get paid to enjoy your day
student, and in some ways love it. I love learning new techniques nd even the old ones and i am ecstatic at the fact that the learning will never stop even at the pro levels.
Never really know what I count as with these kinds of questions, I'm a student but not of anything remotely game design or art related, Physics. So I'd say hobbyist but you might consider me a student?

I clicked on Proffesional.
BUT! a lot of people dislike or find their jobs to be a drag. I enjoy mine. I come home from work happy and the next day i feel more motivated to learn and become a better artist. So in a way I am a little of each, i am a student since art is a process that will never be done. There is always something new to learn. Specially when the industry moves further and further and there is more we can do. I am a proffesional cuz that is what i do for a living. It's my hobby, cuz when i am not doing art for work. I am looking for new ways to become better. I think this makes more sense now... specially when a lot of people here have been saying the same thing i have in less words :P
Gotta say tho.. there is nothing better than making art for video games for me.
I think I'm a hobbyist since here are no 'schools' to get education about game-art.People mentioned self-taught studentness.I'm not sure about the validity of this concept.Because when you say student, mostly people thought you're going to a school and you get lessons from an instructor etc.Learning from the tutorials are maybe counts as a student but It doesn't fits into a complete student concept.
I think people who do not deliberately tries to break into industry is a 'hobbyist' and whether a self-taught or not who tries to break into the industry is would be categorized as a 'student'.I think there is a line between them, maybe blurred.
So I'm a hobbyist and maybe a student and I hope one day I will find myself into the industry without too much deliberation
I'm just a hobbyist building up wisdom so I might get into some 3D art/visual effects school after I'm done with High School (got one year left now) and the obligatory 12 months in the armed forces.
'Student' who just graduated from, collage i guess? (Gymnasium in Sweden!) Trying to learn, but i seem to have fallen into a black hole of knowledge and cannot find my way out of it. Polycount helps the inspiration though!
Lol, intersting to see all various people here on Polycount. I dont have specific answer to what occuptation of I am. I am somewhere between post-graduation and gigs work within 1-year of gaming industry experience. I have not achieved to professional world yet, which I hope to be someday.
I'm in that Limbo Stage, also known as the Grace Period, where I build my portfolio in an attempt to get some work for money. It's a relief though, I can actually make substantial progress on a piece when it's all I really have to focus on. So yeah, Ex-Student, not Yet Professional. In school, that was mostly learning stuff, now it's serious.
Now I'm sort of a student/hobbyist aiming to be a professional again. The big question is which type of professional will I end up being?
As my sig says I'm currently learning programming on my own. I'm hoping to reach an employable level of skill with that and then merge it with what I already know of game art to become a tech artist, or maybe an indie developer.
While I have been paid to do 3d game art, I'm more of a paid professional concept artist who happens to be able to fake his way through a bit of 3d as well..
So i guess i fall into the hobbyist category, since 90% of my 3d is done for fun!

One of these days I am going to transition into more creative work, either technical illustration or game dev, motion graphics, or ad work.

You technically are not a student but a hobbyist who wish to succeed and eventually go pro. <.<
you are a student of polycount.

Well said buddy! The fact that we get paid to do this is just a bonus in my eyes :P (jokes)
