I was wondering, a common trend in game environments nowadays seems to be to "encase" steeper slopes and areas of a landscape in blobby rock-mesh with some occasion outcroppings and spires Epic Citadel, for example:

I was wondering what the best workflow/application would be to achieve an effect like this? I have a lot of experience with heightmap-generated landscapes, but don't have much 3d experience outside of playing around in blender and z-brush a couple minutes.
I recently came across a
tutorial on cgtuts about procedurally adding snow blob-mesh to a 3d model in 3dsmax, and I was wondering if something similar could be done to achieve the effect I'm after.
