Need help with 3ds Max 2012

Hey everyone, I'm new to 3ds Max 2012 (and generally 3ds Max past 3ds 7) and I'm having serious issues applying textures/bitmaps to selected polygons. I'll select the polygon I want to apply the bitmap to, go into the material editor, make sure both the material slot I want to use and the polygon have the same map channel, and then click "apply to," go to the UVW Map modifier, but then nothing happens. Can anyone help me here?
