My name is Benoit FERRIERE and I'm an art director (freelance) in film and video games for 6 years now. Some work I have done on different projects which I Crasher DA.
SeanEG: Thanks you!
sawfish: Haha Thanks Sawfish!
Peris: It makes me really happy! thank you!
fearian: I enjoyed setting up the graphic of a crash, it was an interesting project graphically speaking! It was set up a nervous and stylized art direction mixed with a maximum of anachronisms ... original challenge!
bounchfx: Thank you!
letronrael: That comment really encouraging to me ... thank you very much!
JasonLavoie: Yeah thanks you JasonLavoie!
erik!: Erik haha thank you for your comment! Which do you want in resolution wallpapers? What size're interested also exactly? I get ready when you want it:)
Right now I am preparing a lot of new pictures, speed paints, 3D models, etc.. I would send you quickly and my demo reel for next week!
Having finished several long productions (Crasher, lucha Fury, DeathMonsters, etc.). I'm looking for an exciting new production at the moment (contact me )... and therefore I take this opportunity to produce something a little more personal!
Not sure if you want any crits on the demo reel but here are some things:
1) the quotes are too fast to read and sometimes hard to read too.
2) You should also mention the job/position of the people who said the quotes, as right now they are just "names"
3) the reversing at the end could be a bit faster even.
First of all, I really like your work in general. Beautiful paintings! On the other hand, I'm not sure if I like this demo reel.
A demo reel is supposed to show your work, no more, no less. This demo reel makes it look like you're (OVER)selling a product (in this case, you). The quotes, especially make it look really amateurish. Like "hey, those badass artists love my work, you should love it too" and I don't think you really need this
The "I manage, I mentor, I imagine, I create" is another thing I had hard time with. It, once again, presents you as a product. It presents you as someone who knows he's good and wants to show it off (at least that's the feeling I got).
The video game industry is about skills but maybe most importantly about people and team play and I think that some studios could take this video the wrong way.
Long story short : You have an awesome portfolio, why not showing this, instead !
Haha as I understand you Guntharf! I totally agree and I laugh when I see myself as "trailer" but it is a choice taken and I'll explain why:
I just finished several projects (Crasher, lucha Fury, etc.). and I'm looking for a new project to emulate this new year. Ideally in the cinema. After a few years in this industry, I noticed that unfortunately almost all recruiters art directors are not artists. These are people for finance, Producers, managers or other person outside our universe.
I do not have a style, a skill or technique rather pushed to get people to agree easily on my work (hopefully in 8 / 10 years it will be better ... I am 24 now) . I am so far from my references (Mullins Sparth, m @, Steambot, etc..) that I am dying every morning by sitting in front of my cintiq ... but to find work and to gain the experience I need to find interesting projects in which work to avoid wasting time. And for that I need people, I would call non-expert, feel in my work something fun, cool that will make them want to give me a project. Entrusting me with the logos of their project. And these people often want to film something, something that reassures shareholders that build millions on a project.
I created this little demo reel in this idea. To show that target specific recruiters that I am able to have the shoulders to carry a project from a graphical perspective. I sell myself as a project, an entity that manages and supports a team in one direction.
I am really in a marketing approach, and unfortunately, it is mandatory to find work now. There are so many great artists it is very hard to become known, to win. The people I encounter in the work know how I am and I think anyone with whom I worked could say that I feel superior, or megalomaniac course of my work. I am completely self taught which gives me no assurance precisely. I was often criticized for that. But in a research job in the world of American cinema, my portfolio alone is not enough at all ...
I hope you understand my approach which is based on a market reality (at least that I saw).
And for you, the true artists, people I admired, there is my porfolio classic, for which I need criticism to get better!
Your last reply support even more what I said before. I think you're going the wrong way. From my little experience, you will most likely NOT get a job in the industry (whatever it is) with a video showing everything but what's really important : YOUR WORK. We may have a different vision of the industry, though.
Still from my experience, people making the last call about hiring someone or not aren't the recruiters, but (in our case) the art directors. The recruiters are people who will give your portfolio to the right person that will review you as an artist. And I personally never saw any art directors that could do art.
Also, I'm not sure the people you mentioned as references ever used this kind of "flashy" video to reach their goals. It's all about your work, how good it is and (as I previously said) how well, as a person, you'll fit a team or a production.
Your opinion is quite consistent and I thank you for your feedback to help me. A few weeks ago I apply through my portfolio so I will now see the difference in testing with this trailer. I might as well see if it was helpful or not and dispose if needed: D Regarding the artists that I quoted, I pointed out correctly that I did not level and that their quality, their name alone serves as a reference ... In the meantime I continue to work and show you several new designs soon: D Hope you enjoy them:) Thanks again guntharf.
