Probably the ambient occlusion baked into lightmass that's causing it.

It's the SSAO that's happening in the engine. The further you back away, the darker it gets right? You could turn it off t get rid of that effect.
Go into the world properties and check it off.

It's not a gradual shift like the engine generated AO. It only happens after reaching a certain distance threshold, in this case, roughly three to six feet away.
