Reference and Idea post.
This looks like fun, so, I'm in. It'll be a nice break from paperwork.
I'm doing the Killer Instinct character Sabrewulf.
I have been interested in rethinking werewolves for some time. I like what most of the entertainment industry does in films like Underworld and the Wolf Man (the original and Rick Baker's work on the new adaptation) or shows like Being Human, but I have wanted to see a werewolf that has more of the human still there. I used this as a base idea. I also want to avoid the savage, almost mindless wolf. Wolves live in ordered societies with a lot of structure and culture. I think that a werewolf would have those wolf traits as well.
For the anatomy I chose to use a slimmer, wiry wolf. Some of these wolves can be found in Europe and Arabia. A bit of a visual departure from the beefier werewolves.
In his bio with the original game it states that he is German. I used that as another starting point for the new concept. I decided to play up his German heritage. There is form of fencing in Germany called Mensur. Take a look at these clips:

German nobles and academics participate and the scars they receive are marks of honor.
Now, imagine this...with werewolves.

Here are the wolf references showing the slimmer, more wiry wolf.
These are images of the Mensur fighters.
This base nude sculpt is still being worked on, but it gives and idea of the anatomy that I am shooting for. I kept the body slender, like the wiry wolves except in the shoulders. This is one point where more of the human comes through. I shortened the upper arms and the thighs just a bit to reflect the lupine anatomy while elongating the forearms and shins for the same reason. I still need to adjust his posture, but this is easier to sculpt and paint right now.
In the face and head I really wanted to keep some of the human features. I adjusted distances and proportions to reflect the lupine anatomy, but I kept the key muscle groups needed to show human emotion intact. I want to pay special attention to the eyes. Eventually I want them to look more like the old officer in the previous post.
I just started the Mensur related props. I am not sure that I will use them all. I like the eye protection and the padded vest and mail, but I wonder if they will distract from the wolf too much.
That's what I have so far. Feedback is welcome and sought after.
Thanks.
