Maybe for the back you can give him a little raccoon tail like Mario 3. Or give him his little back pack thing he had in Mario Sunshine.

Minor crit: the gaps between his buttons almost read like some sort of seperate object, like duct tape or larger buttons, maybe you could decrease their width as it goes down?

oh hell yeah it totally does read like that. I actually thought there are some straps in the middle. Also the color of the undershirt and skin is very close. Probably a darker undershirt color would serve you well.

The first thing I noticed were his shirt buttons on his chest. They seem a bit off to me. When I see this big dude I'd expect his shirt buttons to be under a lot of stress and tension, and this might be the look you're going for? But at the moment it feels more as if it's part of the shirt design, as if there are supposed to be gaps between the buttons? I think it's because the gaps are so perfect and evenly spaced.
As you can see in the example I added to this post, not all the gaps show the shirt underneath (sorry it's just 2 buttons and 2 gaps ) the bottom one almost shows the shirt and the top one shows a lot of the shirt. Or maybe have 1 button popped off?
And maybe I'm to late with this and it's to much to change now. But just my 2 cents
Awesome model ! Agree with the colors, though. It seems to be part of your style, but I always find them a bit too watched out for my taste In this case, I think that the shirt and the skin colors are too similar. It took me a few seconds to really see where was the seam on his right shoulder.
ahahahaha SWEEET this is a badass mario! yeah i agree with the buttons on his shirt~ I think small details like that would definitely pop the character out a bit more if you know what i mean Lmao. Great stuff man!

Pic from last night, worked on the back a bit among other things. Right about the buttons, maybe a bit too late to change but I made the gaps smaller as they go down. That has led to a black spot though.
There is still no specular map (it uses the diffuse at the moment) I'll try to finish this chap up tonight and get it posed and presented neatly. There's a lot that I wish I could change but there's not enough time left for all of it.
Also, under the influence of alcohol, I made this chart:
This is really great. I love seeing stuff like this. Gets Me pumped. I might even go back to my entry and finish it up *MIGHT* probably not though. BUT STILL. Fantastic work Man!

Kinda that I couldnt have done more with the high poly but overall, It's still a nice piece and I enjoyed making it. Now I desperately need some sleep (after work, heh)

the FOV thing is really weird though, it makes the right side of the pic kinda look like a flat cardboard cutout. odd.

Only crit's the left strap on his back standing up is weird but that's just nit picking.
