I am just modeling some simple geometry in Maya 2011 and I am kind of stuck how to fix what appears to be a simple problem. I want to delete the faces I have selected but not make the object hollow.

Obviously when I select all those faces and hit delete I end up with a hollow object I can see into. I know I can go back and extrude what I need and solve the problem but I feel like this will come back again eventually. Is their a tool that will solve this automatically for me? Or is their to carve out a certain area like the opposite of extruding.
Thanks for any help!

Or maybe you could also try to boolean that piece out of it although I mostly try to avoid booleans as they don't always give you the desired result. And you probably also need to fix it afterwards.
