I agree with Two Listen on all counts. And also, given that the basis is Victorian era, I think if you push the sex appeal too far it'll just feel wrong. I think that right now you're right at the cusp of pushing it too far. What you have now is good for her. Personally, I'd pull it back a bit even, but up to you.
Hey Dan! Just want to chime in to say The sculpt looks great, but I don't see Raiden, To change the sex and the design is a big stretch, I wouldn't be able to recognize the character unless you told me so. To tell you the truth she looks alot like Ashrah from MK: Deception http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Ashrah
Again these are just my thoughts, take them with a grain of salt.
Arkadius- you know, about a week into this I was thinking I should change thi to ashrah- then after the latest hat iteration I was seriously contemplating it..so....
since Ashrah is basically a female Raiden I am changing this to Ashrah- with victorian twist.
"Arkadius- you know, about a week into this I was thinking I should change thi to ashrah- then after the latest hat iteration I was seriously contemplating it..so...."
Yeah it one way to fix the problem, its a though choice to make, but i think it will work in the end.
The detail is insane! Good job, just make sure the detail is readable from far away and it doesn't just become noise in the normal map. Good work, good choices so far! keep it up
Thanks guys- if all goes well -a 2048 should give me all the res I need- I'm also hoping I have enough medium to large details that it should offset any of the tertiary stuff getting lost. Next step- consolodating some subtools -retopo- and finishing the head/hat/hands- and add the finishing bits to the sculpt. Before all that
can we get a full body front, back and 3/4 shot of where the sculpting is now? hard to crit from the last set of images
on the legs, i wouldn't change a thing, from what i can see id say her proportions are pretty great. she doesn't have man hips like most mk females, but thats definatly a good thing. i think switching it from being raiden is also a good move since you are changing the gender and costume, there is almost nothing to tie raiden in there, and i don't think color alone would cut it. looking awesome more pics plz
thanks mjackson126,jeffro- hats gonna be fashionably late to the party as it probably wont get much sculpting treatment. BUT i am experimenting with her outfit a bit at this point to give it some more fighting game flair. Also, face and some color testing- working on a third color maybe a dark grey/desat blue but trying to keep the gold/white dominant.
thanks alot fellas- took a small break on this one for a day or two- rebooting my domwar and letting my eyes rest on this a bit- probably get some more done later this week.
Figured I'd throw an idea out there for the hat since you are still working on it:
What if..instead of wearing the signature raiden style hat, she carried a parasol of a similar shape over her head. She would still have the recognizable raiden silhouette, but would look much more victorian lady esque.
I've been really enjoying seeing this progress, love the hair. Don't know if this part's WIP or not, but the gold designs on the back of her dress stand out to me as they look painted/drawn on compared to the rest of the gold areas which have more defined edges and look sewn in. Keep it up dude!
gsokol- I've thought about that- she carries a kriss sword so I've experimented with the idea of combining the two- although I am leaning away from the parasol.
Jeffro.chandler- thanks fellas- the yellow pattern on the dress is just visual reference for now- it will be a silk or lace pattern. Just havent got to it yet.
Slow going for me- no time to work on this over the weekend so I'll have to find some time this week I guess.
ok - just about everything i'm doing in zbrush is done.Made changes to the bustle, cleaned up polypaint, most geometry is consolodated and retopod- I'll pimp off some wires when I get my bakes done- so here is and update with a paintover of how I'm hoping she will look in the low- so
this is freaken sweet Dan! She's got a hot face though, maybe experiment with revealing more of it without having to remove the hat? Just a suggestion Of course, this hat isn't as sexy as the one you've got going now. But just throwing it out there. Really great progress though, love it!
A suggestion I bring to the table might be some subtle lightning accents on cards around the hat or some simple thread work/ stitching. A section done with the lacing that the dress has could be subtle yet come off as extensive...
I just feel that the hat's foundation appeals as very simple compared to all the righteous details throughout.
Hey Dan, your concepts are freaking awesome! I agree with Bbox85 though, that you should show off the face. I really like the hat in your third concept, with the feather and all, also the original shoes you had with them. Can't wait to see this finished.
Raiden without the hat simply isn't Raiden, to me. So rather than using a parasol, I think you need to keep the hat. The only problem with the hat is that all the hanging bits hide all of your wonderful face work.
hey all- just wanted to up this thread with a small update- low res is done for the most part- still have some bakes and textures to go- no spec yet..i know i know dont yell! testing out some alpha and color changes- things will probably be changing on and off here for the next few days.
Great job mate,i like those electric stuff on her arms, are you gonna stay with white-yellow color design or this is still a wip, keep going and finish this
well her colors are white and gold-so the color scheme is staying- but im thinking of adding some more color variation to the white- and maybe adding some "authentic battle damage"
also moving to UDK tonight for final presentaton. I want to get some shmancy material+particle effects for the lightning.
oooook- all ported to UDK- started getting the real material effects on- wanna see a video? the capture was kinda slow but it gets the point across. http://vimeo.com/23193286
can you not embed vimeo?
heres a still shot of the UDK progress- i think im going to have to tone down the spastic nature of the lightning effect- it looks cool in realtime but still shots look kinda butt.
Looking good man!
A few pointers though.
- I'd remove the glow on her lower arm and have that effect as floaters around the arm. It'll do great for the silhouette as well.
- Try and get some translucency in the white clothing. And have a very subtle specularity on it rather then the sharp spec you've got going on now. It makes the cloth look quite plastic imho.
- The normal noise on dem titties is distracting, you ought to tone that down a tad.
- Translucency on those little paper/cloth pieces hanging from her head would do wonders.
- The inside of her hat is lit, but her head isn't...
- I find her boots a bit boring to look at. Try adding some color variation in there.
- The fresnel is a bit harsh imho.
This is so fantastic, tbh i think its perfect except I just wanna see her face. But maybe that is apart of the mysteriousness of her character. Anyways 2 thumbs up man, good job
thanks a lot everyone- tons of help and critique I promise every crit given was tested at least once- alas I think I could have worked on this for another 2 weeks haha- anyway- final images will be up a little later- but I have the final turntable here http://vimeo.com/23353186
I'm confused... is this Ashra or a female Raiden? I think it should be a female Raiden... I mean you've got lightning charging in her hands and the current costume is hardly a change from Ashrah's original design. Submitting this as female Raiden though would be a freak awesome idea. Why'd you decide to change it?

just blocked in some colors fro reference in ps
Again these are just my thoughts, take them with a grain of salt.
Also the legs are too Street Fighter-ish. Make them thinner.
Someone that is struck by lightning a lot would probably not have much body fat.
Maybe scarred up face too? Light the lightning has totally jacked her up so that's why she's wearing the veil?
What you have in place is great. Keep at it and this is gonna rock.

@Jeffro- thanks man!
Love, love, love where this is going. moooaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr!
btw, i liked your dwV-mini. really clean.
started working on her boots- as well as showing some closups of where the corset/sleeves

I really like the ruffles.

Have you thought of making the hat out of a sheer fabric? Keep the shape the way it is, but use a material similar to https://www.secondidos.com/images/products/5367.jpg
I have only start to follow this now. it is looking amazing I love the amount of detail, great to see Raiden as a woman also!!
